Fished with Hougie on pool 8 this past weekend in an attempt to get away from the routine a bit and just be with good people after a week most of us will never forget. For the most part the walleye fishing was fair at best, lots of smaller fish with some good fish afer dark, but the pike fishing! All I can say is if you’re in the Lacrosse area, go throw 1/2 ounce traps and #7 RS Shad Raps on deep riprap. If you can spot the boils of adult shad spawning on the rocks, you’re in for a treat. The fish we’re catching were averaging right around the mid 30″ range. Chrome and black traps and natural shad raps worked the best. With the weather cooling and the water temps dropping a guy has a great shot at a real piggie!~

This pattern would likely also hold true elsewhere on the Mississippi River so if you get a chance to get out and give this a shot, let us all know how you did.

Yup -it holds true on 9 too. in addition some early fall “sheebas” :far and few between are jumping into some local rats boats. like I mentioned in report sunrise and sunset. The deer turkeys seem to be following the same pattern. Lawrence

Lawrence, Are you seeing any benefit from “upsizing” of baits to take bigger pike… and to protect the pike a bit from swallowing cranks whole. We had one pike literally swallow a #7 Shad Rap RS, and those aren’t super small cranks either. And when I say swallow, I mean rear of the crank SWALLOWED. Couldn’t believe it. We immediately tried cutting hooks and split rings to save this particular fish, followed by over an hour of attempted boatside care, but to no avail. I guess I’m wondering if you’ve played with larger plugs and if you’ve had a positive response from the pike lately. I’m not real keen on “feeding” any more cranks to pike but they’re a ton of fun to catch….. but I do like to see them swim off in good shape afterwards.
