Cresting

According to the NWS the Mississippi is cresting at Dubuque right now. The rains over the past couple weeks have pushed the river up. Right now the area is under a flood advisory mainly for a couple low lying areas. The river is at 14.58′ and cresting. The flood stage is 17′ so it doesn’t appear that we will reach the flood stage. As long as the heavy rains stay at bay the river should be fishable again within the next week or two. The flow is 113,776 cfs at L&D 11 and needs to be under 100,000 cfs for fishing anywhere with current. The long-range weather forecast is mostly a cold and dry forecast so hopefully the river will fall back to fishable levels soon.

Let’s hope so Eyehunter! I am dyin’ for a good day on the water! Got such a brief tease after ice out, then all this chocolate milk screaming bye, just doesn’t seem fair.

I might just have to hook up the boat tomorrow morning and start driving north until I get to a point on the river where the conditions are fishable. My guess is this would be somewhere in the LaCrosse area. With the conditions here at Dubuque it just isn’t worth going. The water is just too-dirty and, as you know, there is a ton of timber floating down right now. I guess I could break down and go trout fishing tomorrow. I don’t keep the trout when I do catch them as I have never liked to eat trout.
