I have a current Mn fishing licence to fish anywhere on the Mississippi if Im in a boat. Now if I want to fish from shore on the banks of Wisc. will I need a Wisc license ???

No. You must have a license from your state of residency to fish anywhere on the border waters – regardless of access point.

Yes you do need a Wis Liscence, if you are fishing from the bank, on the wisconsin side, if you are launching and are in a boat, it does not matter which liscence you have.

The MN regs said “you may launch and fish from either shore” I assumed that meant boat and bank angling. That is odd….another grey area in teh border regs!

Looks like you can fish even though it does not say anything about fishing from the bank, just fishing the waters. I would check with the local DNR, sorry about the confusion.

As long as you are between the rr tracks you are considered in the boundry waters.Thats what I always thought.

My understanding is, if you’re on the river side of the railroad tracks either license is good. In Wisconsin, if you fish east of the railroad tracks ( boat or bank ) you’ll need a Wisconsin license.

Yes you can fish from shore in WI as long as you are between the RR tracks. Hundreds of people do this around the Dike Road area between Wabasha MN and Nelson WI.

I know down here between Iowa and Wisconsin you can fish anywhere between the railroad tracks which includes fishing from the bank as long as it is on the river side of the tracks. However once you get to where Illinois borders Iowa you cannot bank fish in Illinois with an Iowa license and vise versa. There is no track-to-track agreement. You can fish backwaters with either license as long as there is access to the main channel or something along those lines.

I just called the DNR because I wanted to know for sure myself. The lady told me you could fish from the bank (track to track) in WI with a MN licence. That was for the MISS & CROIX. I guess I never noticed that reg before. It opens alot more water to fish.
