old fishing lures

I was out on pool 1 yesterday with a friend who had recieved, as a gift, alot of old fishing tackle. An older widow who he has been helping gave him her later husband’s fishing stuff. Among other things he got were a couple of vintage split bamboo fly rods. Yesterday he brought along some old crank baits, and little spinners to try. The crank baits were jointed and looked very, very much the new rapala jointed shad raps.. I used these old things and they caught fish. They out fished the rap tail walker he was using and that has been a very productive lure this year. I am afraid to venture out with these old things again though, because while I have got my better half desensitized to my fishing purchases I think it may be a stretch to have her accept the financial outlay the purchase of antique lures will be.

It’s funny how I’m always scrambling for the latest “stuff” no matter what it pertains to. You know darned well that there is some old snaggletoothed codger sitting in every rivertown bar that could walk down the shoreline and catch a limit in 6 casts with a bamboo rod and a bare hook. Unfortunately, my attempts to replicate their success have been…. shall we say… limited.

Until this year, I shot a 30 year-old bow. My excuse was, “Whitetail technology has developed pretty slowly in the last 30 years.” That old junker brought home a deer every year I hunted. Last year I ran into a deal on a new bow that was too hard to pass up, so we’ll see how it works.

I’d guess the pace of walleye technology is on par with that of whitetails.

Love those old baits. Have some heddon river runts in the box. Jointed and solid. Greatest baits ever. I have a few others don’t recall the names. They can out fish any bait on a given day 3 to 1. Some times tend not to use them unless i know I can get them back when I get snagged. Tourney winners on a tough day.
