Pool 2 River condition update

    Hey guys,

Just thought I would throw a little note out to those wondering what the ice conditions on Pool 2.

For the most part Pool 2 is wide open. The 494 ramp has one side open (north side) for use. The south side is full of snow as of yesterday. I took a drive upriver all the way north to the confluence. From downtown St. Paul and to the north, was thin floating ice sheets that looked like they would either be flushed down river or melt away with a day or so. The Confluence area had a good sized ice jam on the Miss side. The ice there was thin enough for any boat to bulldoze through. Once you got by that ice jam it appeared it was open all the way up to the dam.

The Lilydale ramp was semi open. Looked like a plow had plow a path down to the waters edge. There wasa bit of shore ice, but it looked like one boat got in either earlier on Sunday or Saturday sometime. The shoreice there did not look that intimidating at all. I think with a little work, that ramp could be ready to roll by the middle of the week. I might venture down and see if I can open her up a bit this week.

    As for a fishing report……
Thigns are a bit slow so far for my boat. Still fish to be caught, but the bite overall is not there yet IMO. I think its a matter of days before the fish start to go. The river is really clear right now and I think once we start seeing a bit of run off things will start to pick up quite a bit.
I ended up with 5 walleyes for most of the day yesterday. Did mange one walleye around 8# however, but the bite is still a bit slow. I think the bite will start to come around in the next week or so.

Thanks for the update Steve. With the warm up approaching I’m sure many of us can’t wait to get back down there.

Thanks for the info Steve. Think this is going to be a busy weekend on pool 2? It seems like every year around the 1st warm snap pool 2 gets jumping with boater looking for daytime saugers. Heck, somedays the parking lot at 494 can even be 3/4 of the way full. Hope to hear some reports in the next week or so if the sumo saugers are going. Last year Lipripper and I where getting into them pretty good starting in mid February.

    Mike,

I for one will be welcoming that first warm snap! I am about sick of this winter and want spring to get rolling ASAP! The big female walleyes should start to be on the move here by this weekend is my guess….

At any rate I think the fishing should start to get better with these warming weather patterns that they are forecasting right now. Well see…..

Steve, Providing I can get the impeller changed out on Saturday I might head down for a short run on Sunday. Did you by chance get a look at the Hidden Falls ramp, is it open?

    Anytime,

I stopped at the confluence the other day as there was a good sized ice jam here. By now, it should be gone. My guess, the hidden falls ramp should be in good shape with the amount of current that is there.

Also, I thin kthe Lilydale ramp should be a good shape by the weekend. I will be down there a couple times this week, and I will plan on bringing a chisel, shovel, etc…. to clean it up some.

    See you down there.

The park is open BUT you are certainly not going to be using the Boat ramp it’s completely covered in snow.

    Pier,

Do you think its a case of a couple hard working shovelers and a couple hours to get the job done?

It is down hill so maybe… I thought about maybe bringing the snowblower but my back still hurts from the recent blizzards.

I think Lillydale would be easier……pm if you need help with that one.

Maybe someone with a ATV and plow attachment would be able to assist in the clearing. I know of one guy, I would have check with. That would make quick work.
    Just an idea.

Ahhh, I had forgotten that it snowed TWICE last week! I was down on Monday or Tuesday last week and launched successfully.

    UPDATE!!!!

What difference a day makes….I went down to Hidden Falls with poles and shovel in hand and low and behold someone with a 4 wheeel drive truck and boat was just pulling his rig out I’m assuming he did some shoveling at the bottom of the ramp because it was down to the pavement in the needed traction areas….

I cleaned it up a little more and I would have to say a 4 wheel drive vehicle can get the job done.
It’s still pretty slippery near the top so 2 wheel or front wheel vehicles may have some problems.

Thanks for the update Pier. I will give an update on the Lilydale ramp later tonight or early tomorrow morning.
