I am looking to buy a new reel for lead core trolling. I found Abu Garcia 6000 reels on sale at a local dept. store, and was wondering if it is a suitable reel for lead core. I believe it will hold about 250 yards of 12# test mono, and has a fast retrieve ratio. Anyone use these or similar Abu Garcia reels, how are they? This is on sale until supply is gone for $40. Good deal???

If this is the 6500 C3 you are talking about I would like to know where the sale is after you get what you need. I use them for trolling and casting. Can’t answer the question about leadcore cause I don’t have it on any of the reels. I have to say though that I will probably buy all line counters in the future for trolling. But I still want some fro Musky and casting cranks.Lawrence

    Hey Rooster,

I personally use some moderately priced penn reels for lead core applications. I don’t feel the abu’s hold enough line. Just my opinion though. It depends on how many colors of lead you feel you’ll be trolling with. Do you have the precision trolling guide?? If so, read all the info on lead core to help decide how you want to run your cranks for the area you are in. Hope this helps!! Good luck!

Check out the details on these to know if they are “new” or “reconditioned”. I have a few Abu Garcia reels myself and one that I purchased was reconditioned and it failed after very little use. It was sold “as is’ with no warranty.

If they are new it is a good deal.

Ooops, the 6000’s are $59, the 5000’s are $49, I misread the price racks. They do have 6500 C3 for $79. I bought a 6000 Ambassaduer, holds 245 yds of 14# test, I believe for my applications here 9 or 10 colors will be enough. Not many areas over 30ft that I’ll be trolling. Where can I get the precision trolling book? Is it useable for us novices?

I looked everywhere in my area and this was the best price I found on these reels, at Wal Mart! I could not find much else with enough capacity for lead core, except a $45 Shakespeare with line counter that weighed about 4 lbs I think! Did not seem to be very good quality.

They are new reels , not reconditioned. I hope it’ll hold up to the fat sheepies that have been eating my crankbaits lately, and the occasional slimmer!
