I was out fishing last Sat. At around midnight my wife was asking me if we wanted to come up and have a fire. (Yes the fish were that close to my dock where I live.) Right at that time I felt my sucker minnow stop moving with a thud. (sucker minnow was 9 inches long).

I let out line and waited until the line stopped moving. I reeled in till I felt a slight amount of weight. At that point I set the hook. Dam it! For a split second I thought I was snagged on that log that has been paining us all night. Then I felt a massive head shake.

The fight wasn’t spectacular but when I saw this thing roll up to the side of the boat my knees started to shake.

I already caught many 30 inch walleye, present and in the past and this one freaked me out.

I got a few pictures of it including a release picture. In all that time I didn’t even think of getting a length.

    For a reference I am 5′ 10″ and weigh 185.

Try and figure out the way size it is in comparison to the wieght of the fish …if you remember) and the fact that if was a post spawn fish etc.. etc.. and go from there… I have the same problem with the length I never measure the length of flatheads I always go by the wieght to kinda guage them..

    Thanks.

My first and formost thought was to hurry and get a few pictures and get her back into the water. Just want to note also that I never use a net on these fish. I use heavy enough gear (15 pound fusion with a 10 pound mono leader about 8 feet long) so the fight isn’t to strenuous on the fish. I don’t want to split their fins. It’s really nice to know she lives right out in front of the house and maybe I’ll have another crack at her.

It’s amazing when you learn a lake. I have been here 11 years and pretty much know where they will be in different seasons and water temps. But they are walleye and will confuse ya every now and then.

The big sucker minnow bite is pretty much over and I think it’s time to go a little deeper and start with the jumbo leeches. Problem is that the big small mouth like those to! (I like smallies also!)

I am not sure of this but if you want a fairly accurate length and you have a complete side shot of the fish with you holding it you can use the measure of the distance using your middle phalanges (your finger is split into 3 bones starting at the tip of your middle finger this is the distal phalange, the next is your middle followed by your proximal ) on most people this distance is approx.4 cm or 1.5 inches. So on your pic measure this distance on your finger then in the same way you use a distance chart on a map you can measure your fish length.
Does this make sense to anyone besides me?
I understand the process but my not be relaying it in the best manner.
Well good luck! I guess those years in the Pentagon reading Satellite photos have finally come in useful! I guess I could tell you more but then I would have to kill you

    Watcha talkin’ about Willis?

Ha Ha Just kidding. I think I understand what you are saying. I tried to figure out different ways to measure but I think the best way to do it is to fish like crazy and try to catch her again and measure her.

I seen a few boats on this lake now and they are pounding the water pretty heavy. It dismays me because I heard one group talking to the other how they each got a “ten” pound fish. That makes three fish. Then I heard how great they tasted but there was so much they fed the rest to the dog. Now here they are out again trying to get some more meat.

I just hope they enjoy the fishing because it isn’t going to last on this lake. It’s a mile wide and 2 miles long. It can only hold so many fish and a big reason why catch and release is so vital.
