    Hello everyone,

I spend a lot of time on the water during the summer months. What kind of sunglasses does everyone wear? Should I spend the extra money to get “polarized”? Is there a difference between a good pair of polarized and a cheap pair? I would like to get the best sunglasses for my buck, so how have you liked your current pair? I’m looking to spend about $100 – $120. Thanks ahead of time for the responses.

I really like the Costa Del Mar line of sunglasses. They should fall into the price range you are looking for. I would definitely go with polarized sunglasses.

I like stike king fishing glasses. 12 bucks a pop and I lose my fair share.

I have to agree with “Blue Fleck” on the name brand. I would like to add that buying glass lenses is the way to go. They don’t scratch like plastic lenses and are much more durable.

I have owned and used one pair of polarized Costa Del Mar’s going on 10 years! I have fishng buddies who have owned quite a few different pair in the time I have owned one.

    Keep the rods bendin’!!!

I bought a pair of H30 Hydro Optics Tsunami’s a couple of years ago. 80 buck range I think. Nice glasses, the nosepiece design sucks, and they were not as nice as the Costas I was looking at, which were more than 120, I think they were 150-180? BF, you got a hook up????

I assume you guys are talking about regular polaroize sunglasses and not prescription or bifocals. Anyone recommend a good pair of polaroize prescription sunglasses?

I paid $90 for a great pair of polarized sunglasses at Cabela’s. They came with a crushproof metal case that has saved them more than once. I picked a pair with larger lenses for better range of vision. They have many to choose from in the high end display case.

Lat summer i spent most my days workin on the water electrofishin or netting fish, so i needed a GOOD pair of shades. I wound up buying a awesome set of Costa Del Mar glasses. They are scratch proof and polarized. THough they were at least 150$, they were well worth the coin………….cuts the glair like nothing else! Make sure to get one of them neck straps for em too…..so incase ya lean over to grab a fish, yr shades dont go ‘Kerplunk’ into the water!

I think I’m gonna call sunglass hut today to see how much for a polarized lens for my Oakley M-frames.

To be honest, I would seriously consider them. I don’t have the polarized lens yet, so I can’t tell you how well it works, but I’ve got the frames and three other lenses that just snap in and out (red irridium, amber, clear for riding motorcycle at night). The lenses aren’t really all that expensive, either.

I don’t think Oakley makes a polarized lense for their M-Frame line. If they do, you can be sure I will be buying some new lenses for mine. I checked the website and couldn’t come up with anything. Here it is for you to check out.

They do have some nice polarized glasses, although I have not owned a pair of them.

I bought my Costa Del Mars in 1993. I still wear them every time fishing or driving (daytime). Still work great. I figure that after this season, they will only have cost me 12 dollars per year. Before 93, I was wrecking a pair per year so I guess I am even price wise. As far as polarized goes though they are great.

I think you’re right about the oakleys

I was surfing their site yesterday and saw polarized lenses as an option, but they don’t make a blade for the M-frames that are polarized. I called the sunglasses place just now and they said that was correct. I’ll have serious problems dropping another $150 in oakleys to get the polarized straight-jackets.

    Hey, Wooly

Just a theory, but my thought is that when you pay $10 for something, you probably won’t take care of it as well as something you paid $150 for. I’ve found that with my prescription sunglasses – prior to getting them I’d go through 2 or 3 pairs a year. I’d loose them, stuff them in a tacklebox or pocket where they’d get scratched or even crushed. Now, after paying over $200 for the ‘scripts, I treat them like a 30″ walleye on 4lb line!

And, yeah, glass lenses are my preference. With a nose as big as mine, it can handle the extra weight.

I personally love Oceanwaves. I have the Bandanna series. They use straps instead of regular ear pieces which I love due to no fatigue. I used to get headaches all the time before. Glass polarized lenses and you can get them in a prescription.

Polarized makes a hugh difference, not ever comparable even in dirty water. I have H2Optics, not sure of the model, bought at Scheels for about 100. I saw a Fishing Univ show with charlie Ingram (sp?) with solar bat glasses- you can actually get the frames and exchange different tints of polarization (ie light, grey, brown, etc) depending on conditions. I have not tried them but they look nice.

about paying more money for something you will take care of it is right on. i paid 150 for a pair of oakley’s and i still have them now 3 years later. i was given the option for polarized lenses for another 60 bucks, but i decided not to go that route, but now i wish i would have, myne are finally starting to get scuffed up and that so i will be getting a new pair here soon.

I,ve been happy with my oceanwaves… I read somewhere that they were the highest quality lenses available at any price. Not sure if this is accurate, but they have been good. the glass lenses do make a difference in my opinion..

get polorized for sure whatever you get, big difference

Thanks everyone for your personal experiences. I think I’m going to try and find a distributor of “Costa del mar’s”. Thanks again.

I use the same pair of Smiths for driving and fishing. Great glasses. Just bought a pair of Maui Jims but haven’t tested them yet.

I use OceanWave T-3s for really sunny high glare conditions but for most other conditions I love my copper shaded polarized Ray Bans. The test is how tired your eyes feel after a day with em on.

PS. Leo Kam, your local optometrist can get prescription Ray Bans made for you. I have a little bifocal in mine.

Thanks for that tip Tom, I’ll ask. I’m at that age where I have to wear tri focals. Also, I had the doctor measure my bi focal prescription 8 inches instead of the standard 15 for easier knot tying and it works. Dont have to strain my eyes as much.

After going to the “sunglass hut” and trying on several Costa del mars, and Maui Jims I found a nice pair of bolle’s. They were only $99 bucks compared to the Costa del mar’s at about $200. The polarized lenses are the only way to go. Everything is so crispy and clear. I haven’t had them on the water yet but look forward to it. The other nice thing I liked about the bolle’s were was they were so light. Compared to the Costa del mar’s with the glass lenses the bolle’s weight about 1/2 the weight. Really nice is you are gonig to be on the water ALL day. Thanks again guys.
