Just a quick little update. Fished three beautiful nights on the Columbia at Umatilla (about 170 miles east of Portland, Oregon).

The moon was out and so were the walleyes! listed by length all over 24″ were released… 31,29,28,26,6-24, 22, 20 inches… most were taken on plugs using three ways.

Out in Oregon land where the walleyes grow bigger and the Native Americans are netting and selling them on the open market, $3.00 a pound…

    Dan,

Sounds like fun! Thanks for the post from out west.

We have a similar situation here where the Indians net walleye. Can’t say they sell them on the open market. However, the (Indian) casinos seem to be having a lot of “All you can eat” fish fries the last few years.

I guess I’m a little “ornry” today, and don’t take offense to my question. OUt of the list of fish you gave(all OVER 24 released) only 3 out of the 11 fish were released? Please someone tell me I’m wrong, but I have understood that the best egg producing walleye are the 20 -25 inchers?

Time to “cyber jump” me guys!?

I guess I’d hate see a great fishery even in Orgeon go to the wayside, especially if there is commercial and Native American harvesting!

    JUst curious mostly!

We are heading to Kabe Sept 27-30. We fished it last year-did OK, but missed the great fishing by one day due to a front. Have you fished it before? I love the lake-so many areas to fish. We focused on the area just south of the Ash River. Almost exclusively jig fishing. We are new to the lake, so if you have any tips it they would be greatly appreciated. So much water, so little time.

We are getting off the post’s subject a tad but, last I heard(this morning) the walleye are still a little deep, but if your prepared, it should be no problem finding fish! This will be my first time fishing Kabetogama. If you remind me, I will definitely give you a report when I return. I plan on “burning some blades” I made with and with out bottom bouncers to find active fish. Then jigging! Evenings are suppose to be VERY good long lining raps etc. outside of weedbeds. As with many lakes, I like to try fishing deeper then moving shallow, rather than starting shallow first. Hitting the shoulders or saddles that connect points and islands can be very effective, especially if they have been pounded by the wind!!

Again, remind me before you head up and I’ll let you know what I encountered!!!! Nothing like walldog fishing in September up Nort!!!!!!!! Yehhaaaaa!

We stayed at Harmony beach and the guys there were great. The lakes had turned over and he said that the fish on Kabe relate mostly to the deeper water adjacent to shallow bays. The richly oxygenated water of the weedy shallows moves deep and take all the baitfish with it. I have always found fish deep on sharp breaks in the fall after the lakes turned over, but never focused on areas near shallow bays.

We caught several large eyes and keeper sauger between two islands called little and big something. Sorry I dont remember the names right now, but the larger island is one of the biggest on the lake and visible from Harmony Beach. If you are staying at a resort on the south end of the lake, it is visible from shore.

Besides that, most came just south east of the Ash River on the major inlet 1 mile or so down the shore on the same side that the Ash comes in.

As far as trolling at night, there isnt much for weedlines, I will be interested to hear what you find. It isnt something we tried.

    Good luck
