For all of us who love the fight of those toothy critters this cooler weather has brought out the bite of the pike. So start thowing those rattle traps and anything else that will attrack some of the best fightin action around! I was in the backwaters of pool 6 and they were hitting nicely saturday AM.

I guess the picts from the picnic must be out cause there is a new and even uglier pic of haywood! :o)

    Hey bud!

I’ve got a question for you about traps and pike…..

Have you tried the frenzy rattle baits for pike yet? The last bass trip I had, down on pool 8 with Hougie, we had 3 rattle traps rigged and one frenzy. The bass absolutely ignored the frenzy but the pike just freaked on the thing. Every guy in the boat caught a pike on the lure and nobody had a single slimmer on the traps. I was wondering if you’d seen a similar preference for the frenzies by the pike. The frenzys are REALLY loud and a bit bulkier than the regular traps and the action looks to be a bit more pronounced-wider wobble.

The bass didn’t seem to dig them at all though. Let me know if you’ve played with these lures yet or not.

I have a buddy that swears by frenzys,We fished a tourney about a month ago I was throwing a wee-R and boating alot of bass while he was useing a spinnerbait and hadn’t caught a fish in 2hours he tied on a frenzy and the first cast was a 3lb bucketmouth he then out fished me the rest of the day and went on to win the tourney after the tourney he went out and bought $150 of frenzys and to this day every time out he always catches a fish on them! I can’t say I’ve had the same luck with them but they do catch bass!!!! LOL

I have both frenzys and traps. I tend to favor the Bill Lewis lures first. Both work well but the traps I think put out more noise and vibration. Just my 2 cents. Still my favorite bait is the hola popper.

I have lost every Frenzie I ever threw to northern pike. Must be three or four gone now… I guess they do love them. As do the bass! Hawger

All the fleetfarms, ganders, cabelas, etc. will have them. Cost is $3.50 -$4.00 I think if I can remember right.

Pick up a couple steel leaders along with them!

I fished a small lake near brainerd this summer. Hooked tons of northerns on frenzys and even a walleye in shallow cabbage. They run true no matter how hard you crank em. Yes I broke off many slimers as well.(back to FF to reload)….awesome bait.

This is my first posting, so bear with me. I had the honor and pleasure meeting some of you at the get-together. Pike is something I think I can speak to. I have a 51″ this year and 53″ in 1999 to my credit. I got them in Saskatchewan, Wollaston Lake. I showed James and a few of you FTR freinds the report of this year trip of 30 over 36″ of Catch and Release Pike. Not bragging but if you use the length cubed/3500 formula thats about 1200 lbs of BIG PIKE as more than half were in the 40+ range. I true trip of a life times.

Anyway it seems that pike are pike and they love noise. Some of the best lures on Wollaston Lake are the Mann’s 1-Minus and Mid 1-Minus. I have used them on the river around Winona and had success. They make enough noise to be heard close to the boat while in the water. Fire Tiger and Flor. Greens work best up there, the new haolgraphic in the Mid size also did well this year. I showed James my collection and he agreed they should work on the upper pools. Will let you all know after the next trip in Oct.

I must add that the 53″, a SK record for C&R for a year – he said humbly, was caught on in-line spinner, similar to a Mepps #5, WITH A BENT BLADE. I think this made a different sound that the queen and her court hadn’t heard before.

I will get some of the Frenzy lures in the rattler. I have heard the hooks aren’t the greatest, but what is it to beef them up. I did see them last year at Bass Pro in a dump bin for next to nothing. I guess I blew it not getting a couple.

Thanks for the chance to converse.
