Border waters question.

A guy at work and I have a disagreement. The question is “If I live in Minnesota and possess a MN fishing license and fish on the St. Croix (border waters) can I fish with two lines”? Where does it specify what “extra” rights I might have on border waters?

Page 46 and 47 of the Minnesota Regulation book.

With a Minnesota license, you may fish 2 lines on the St Croix and Mississippi where Minnesota and Wisconsin border.

Wisconsin license holders may fish 3 lines….

Someone told me last week that you had to wear your lifejacket AT ALL TIMES on the Mississippi or other border waters. Is this true?

I interpeted the law as only WI residents could fish two lines in border waters. Here’s the statement I read:
    Broder waters:
When Minnesota’s fishing regulations differ from the bordering state’s regulations, Minnesota residents and persons fishing under a Minnesota non-resident license must comply with the Minnesota regulations and may NOT exercise more liberal fishing privileges in Minnesota waters.

That means you cannot fish 3 lines like the Packer Backers!!

    Read the first line:

“Two lines with a single lure or bait on each are permitted…..”

Anyone on board under the age of 13 must wear a life jacket at all times while on deck. New reg this year on Coast Guard Patrolled waters. (Miss, St Croix, Lake Superior, LOW ,ect)

I thought that the lifejacket rule only applied when the boat was traveling.

    DaveB,

I believe that is correct. Here is a link to the Coast Guard website:

    Fireline,

The St Croix has a season that just opened up last weekend. The season for walleye closes March 1, 2004

Jon ,is the St. Croix a border water like the Mississippi ? I just wondering , if it’s a border water between Mn and Wi , why it wouldn’t be openned year around like the Mississippi ?

Hey Tom, the St. Croix is not a boarder water. It is a inland water in Wisconsin that just happens to flow into the Mississippi River. So its ”opener” is the same weekend as the Wisconsin Lake opener which seems to always be one week ahead of the Minnesota lake opener. Thanks, Bill

Not quite sure of the St. Croix question but here is the MNDNR defintion of MN/WI “Border” waters

“The seasons and regulations listed below apply to the following waters:
Mississippi River (downstream of Prescott, Wisconsin), Lake Pepin, St. Croix River (including Lake St. Croix) , St. Louis River, St. Louis Bay, and Superior Bay. Daily and ossession limits are the same. Licensing: See page 43.”

Almost all of the St Croix river is border water. (If it was all WI inland water, I would need a WI fishing license to fish there!!)

Minnesota has agreements with Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, WI, and Cananda. There are different seasons and limits depending on the lake or river you are fishing.

Bottom line, check the regs. before going out on any new water!

Good one Bill!!! Now, if we can just get Jon J. to show us where “Cananda” is, I’ll be able to get myself square on those regs too!

Too many different regs Stillakid! I just try to follow what I hear and check the book if I have questions. Now trying to get our friend Jon J. to explain the Cananda ones wouldn’t be very nice of us as there are many and alot of them aren’t in our favor. Anyway, just remember Wisconsin, St. Croix, and Iowa openers are one week ahead of ours and you will be ok. If you can’t remember that then just fish the Mississippi River for walleyes year round and you won’t have any problems. Thanks, Bill
