I have always in the past used 10 pound mono for trolling but this year i am gonna troll my tail off in the lake too. I was curious if anyone else uses mono instead of super line. The super line is a little to pricey for me otherwise i would spool all 4 line counters. My question is can fish see that hi viz green or mint green at all cause I would like to use this line for visibility. Also to prevent the clams and zebra muscles does anyone tie on a 15 or 10 foot snell if superline from the crank then attcach it to the mono at all. I know it is a lot of questions but figired you guys could help me out for spooling it up.Thanks

I believe in superbraids also. They do pay for themselves. I like trolling the rocks and wingdams. On the rocks and wingdams too many zebra mussels are present, along with other things that will be abrasive to mono lines. I hate losing 7 dollar raps. I would pay the extra buck or two for braided. Also using the braided most times you can pull the raps out of the snags buy stretching the hooks. With braided you can use a heavier test and still keep a small diameter.
May 5, 2003 at 6:14 pm #265893I too prefer superbraids. I have had great luck with spiderwire. The added strength also helps get your expensive cranks free from snags – which alone makes it worth the added cost. It comes 150 yards per spool, so you could actually rig up 2 rods per spool by putting some backing on the reel. That would give you 225 feet per reel which should be more than enough for most, if not all trolling situations. Good luck.

May 6, 2003 at 2:00 am #265946Line to line knots between mono and superlines don’t work very well, because of the slickness of the superline. You could get a solid hold by using a barrel swivel or something like, but know that it will add drag to your line and run the lure shallower.
If there’s a lot of weeds in the river, I like to use a swivel in-line anyways, to catch the crud that gets caught on the line before it fouls the lure; this only works about 50% of the time, but it’s better than using weeds for bait all day long.

I get multiple season out of one $12 spool of spiderwire and rarely lose a crank with this line. On the performance end of things, I can’t even fathom trolling without the sensitivity of the braids at work for me. Everyone has their own style and way of doing things but I would recommend taking a hard look at the braids. In the end, they’ll save you money, not cost you.
Best of luck.
May 6, 2003 at 11:48 am #265956With the no stretch on the superbraids you can also rip off all the weeds with a big fast pull forward. That way you don’t have to bring the lure in every time you get a weed on it. Gotta love the stuff. I just changed all my rods over last week to braided for the crankbait bite.
May 6, 2003 at 12:48 pm #265961I also belive the braids save money in the long run.Ispooled up with power pro this spring and like it better than fire line, its not as prone to dig into the reel after fighting a big one.
May 6, 2003 at 1:15 pm #265965Someone earlier mentioned the sensitivity a superbraid offers. This is probably one of the biggest advantages. With a superbraid, you can always see your rod tip vibrate as you troll along with a crank bait. As soon as you foul hook a small weed that vibration stops. You don’t get that kind of performance from mono.
Another hint for you: troll with a longer softer tip rod when running superbraids and you won’t have to worry about hooks ripping out of a fish.Good Fishin’!!
CrossinMay 6, 2003 at 2:28 pm #265969I have been using spider wire scince it came out for long lining and have always loved its performance !! i have ran 3 + years using the same line so it really does pay for itself1
May 6, 2003 at 3:27 pm #265972John, use the uniknot system for tying two lines together. In this case, mono and braided. Thats what I use and haven’t had any problems with slippage.

May 6, 2003 at 4:15 pm #265977WOW thanks everyoen for all the replys…went out last ngith and baught some 10 pound mono and plan on buying either power pro or spiderwire tongit to spool up for the weekend of trolling. I think the superline can be used on 3 ways i hope cant it. It would prolly work great with it cutting through the water a lot sloother than mono. Thanks again everyone and look for me at the head of the lake on saturday long lining or trolling 3 ways. Have a 14 foot Alumacraft ith a 25 horse yamaha on the back and all the decals ont he side. Hopfully we ahve better luck than we did last sunday in that huricane
May 6, 2003 at 9:23 pm #265995The uni-knot works as does a double surgeons knot. Here is a link to how to tie them.
