OK All you computer experts out there, help an old fella out and tell me what the best antivirus system is to put on my computer. I had Macafee with my Gateway and the Chyrnoble Virus got that one, I’ve had Norton ever since on my Dell with no problems but they tell me it’s one of the worst.

Who is they
I have not ever had a problem with Norton on my home PC. I work for a good sized company in the LaCrosse area with over 600 computers on the LAN. Norton has done well here also.
January 9, 2007 at 4:03 pm #520224I use a free anti-virus called AVG and have never had a problem, knock on wood, it automatically checks for updates and downloads and installs them, you can get here
Free anti virus The thing I like best is it’s free and it works!!Ed

January 9, 2007 at 4:24 pm #520236I’ve had to repair more systems that have been corrupted by Norton than any other antivirus software package. It may be caused by the huge initial install base due to computer manufacturers having a 30-day version installed. However, support is about non-existant for Norton to the average home customer (re-install the OS to fix your product? Definitely not). In the last few years the complaints of Norton installs not working at all have risen dramaticly.
AVG Antivirus has been good for the last few years. Looks like they want more paid business and have modified the website to that effect, but the free version is still available for personal use.
January 9, 2007 at 4:42 pm #520244I just made the switch to the free AVG after Norton problems. If all goes well I’ll pay them for it. I’m sure the paid version is better than the free one. And the price is the same as Norton roughly but you get 2 years worth instead of 1.
theduckPosts: 149January 9, 2007 at 5:08 pm #520254What kinds of problems have you people had with Norton? I have had it since I bought my computer in 2003 and I have had no problems with it. It seemes to block all of the unwanted stuff and removes any spy ware and ad ware that happens to come in from the web. If I ever do by chance get a bad file it removes it immediately. I have had no system problems yet that I am aware of.
January 9, 2007 at 6:00 pm #520285I’m going to weigh-in here, too. Had Norton and had a couple of crashes after downloads from Norton were installed and one as it was installing. Went to AVG-free and have been quite impressed. It’s nice to have it update and scan in the background automatically.

January 9, 2007 at 6:33 pm #520309We use AVG and it does good. Norton used to be very good and still is.. if your computer doesnt lock up from installing it, or run at slug speed.
McAfee is a joke.

This is one of the best programs available for this. Wether it is the free version or the bought version.
Norton takes alot of system resources and adds lots of extras which are not necessary. Can make your system run slow depending on your hardware.
MacAffee well your experience speaks for itself.
January 10, 2007 at 1:58 am #520539Bret, “They” are two computer repair companies out of the phone book. Like I said I haven’t had any problems with Norton except maybe hard to contact them. Thanks for the input all.
