I work in North Minneapolis, just south of the Lowry Bridge. There is a mile marker shown on a sign of a building just north of the bridge that reads: “Mississippi River, Mile 836.” It may not be exactly 836, but it is in the 800’s. I’m trying to figure out why the number is so high? It’s certainly shorter than 800 miles to Itasca and farther than 800 miles to Louisiana. Any ideas?

It’s from one of the major confluences, I believe. Ohio River, maybe?

Thanks for the link JJ! Our instructor for the Coast Guard classes will be using it. I was out voted on where the miles started at.

I think it is the distance from either Cairo, IL or St. Louis, MO. Basically where the lock and dam system ends as you head south.
