from the dam area down to Evert’s. Sounds like the spawn is almost over. I’ve fished there twice this year which is double of what I fished there last year. Will the walleye start heading down to the lake soon? I’ve got some friends coming the 3rd weekend of May. Will the wingies still produce fish? Smallmouth be going by then? Only fished the area in Fall and early Spring. If it’s hot will we see women in bikinis?

I can’t guarantee the bikinis by then……… Of course James seems to get the flashers down there once in a while. You’ll likely get many different responses, but at that time of year, typically I’ll be pulling cranks or live bait rigs down on pepin. It might be a little on the early side, but that is when it has taken off in the past. If you do try the cranks down there, hit the rip/rap shorelines, and don’t be afraid to go too fast.
April 24, 2003 at 12:17 pm #264998The middle of may is one of the best times to be on pepin’the rip rap the flats with gravel the mouths of the rivers&creeks can be very good.I like to pull cranks this time of year also.spinners with crawlers&leaches can bring fish to the boat too.then theres those ringies and k grubs.try them all and you will find somthing to tug on your line.good luck to you

April 25, 2003 at 3:17 am #265085I guess I’m willing to bet that the 2 – 3 week in May will be right around the peak for the big numbers bite out on Pepin. I was down on the lake today and had 51 – 53 degrees most everywhere I went so the beginnings of the crank bite is just a short time off. My guess is I could have caught a few had the debris not been so bad at the top of the lake. Along the WI shoreline it looked like hay bales had been tossed about as the wind piled it up along the rocks.
As far as smallies on ringies in May…. the rocks south of Lake City will be prime about that same time. A natural colored ringie on a 1/16 – 1/8 ounce head is a flat out killer on nice smallies and you’ll kncok a good number of walleyes and will feed a few to the pike as well.
You’ll have lots of option with the potential to catch some nice fish in numbers that time of the year.

Would rather fish closer to Evert’s as I am somewhat familiar with the area. Maybe go to the lake first and fish our way back?BretNPosts: 34May 1, 2003 at 2:29 pm #265644I would start at Lake City and hunt around. The access at the park just south of downtown (I think it’s Rochen Park) is one of the nicest access/parks/wayside rests around. Plenty of parking, two ramps, and several miles of riprap to work right near town. I think it even has a fish cleaning shack there, but can’t remember.
If you prefer to drift, I’ve done real well there drifting w/ rigs and jigs and usually leeches. If the walleyes are going on the trolling bite, drifting just south of the access and next couple points down from there always seems to put a few eater sauger in the boat for me with an occasional walleye thrown in. It’s not a hard area to learn to fish effectively and you don’t have any current to contend w/ just wind and waves. Good luck. Bret
