I bow fish quite a bit. This keeps me in shape for bow hunting. Alot of carp have been sunning themselves lately so I’m thinking of digging the bow out.

I did it a lot during high school, but haven’t for about four years. Used to just run the bank west of CR here at Chain Lakes natural area and pop them out of the log jams.

    Pretty cool stuff

Ah, what memories. My Dad and I and a couple of neighbors would go out and arrow about 20 buffalo and carp, take them home and smoke them. When they were done we would take them the rest of the neighbors to share. They would have crackers and a cold Schmitty or Hamm’s for us and good conversation about the upcoming planting season on the farm. It was really the last break before the heavy planting season started. It was just as good as the deer sausage runs we did before Christmas.

I live in Cottage Grove, Minn. Any hints where I might pick up a couple of carp close to here?

    Thanks

I do all of my carp shooting out of my boat. I also spear alot of carp when there spawing. Now that is a blast.
There are a few great spots that I know of where you can shoot 30 a day. Gar are a challange cuz they are so darn skinny.

How dare you uneducated knuckle draggers even contemplate shooting the noble carp with an arrow?! The carp should be the MN state fish and all other species pale in virtue to the carp.

Ha! That was my carpchaser impersonation for those of you that remember who he is…lol I’ll go away now… just had to do it. If he sees this post, I’m the one getting shot with an arrow!

I sure hope he has a sense of humor.

I used to shoot a lot in the spring back home, but haven’t found a spot where it’s legal in the west metro. Any suggestions, I’m on the west end of Minnetonka, close to Whaletail, Dutch, Parley or Waconia??

Putz, I haven’t pulled a bow for a couple of years, but we would run down to Hastings. Take a left on 15th St, then go out a couple miles. There’s a great slough on the left. I’m not sure if the water’s high enough for them to get into it this year though.

If you do go…make sure you give us a report!

The Mississippi doesn’t open till May 3rd for MN residents. Wisconsin usually opens about a week or two before that and during that time WI residents are limited to their half of the river. There are some good fun tournaments in May & June put on by several of the archery clubs between Winona and Lacrosse. Trempealeau, Arcadia, Whitehall and a few others. I can get more specific info if anybody’s interested.

shootin’ carp is like shootin’ crows. there’s a season for it, but i there aren’t many that would give you a hard time about doing it out of that season. maybe some really stuck up DNR officer. i just don’t see a point of having a closed season for something that no one cares for and wants to get rid of. it doesn’t make any sense to me.

    Ok== Deep breath – – – slowly exhale ****** !!
Jake: The law is the law. You have to consider that there was a reason to create it. Maybe there may be too many other spawning fish that may be disturbed.
I would hope that a CO would do the job he is paid to do , not just look the other way unless he is having a “bad day”.
Carp , just like any other living and breathing fish , have a place in the eco system. I realize they were brought here foolishly , but there has been no order from the DNR to eradicate them at will.

Ya cant say that nobody cares for them pound for pound they fight as well if not harder than a walleye. They can be a great way to expose young fisherman to the thrill of hawg fishing When my son was about six or seven he tied into a nice 4 pounder in the cannon river .It was his favorite fish story for about 5 years until he persuaded his uncle dino and me to take him out on Mille Lacsand then outfished us. I think the main reason they have a season on them is that they just might be in close proximity to other shall i say more desirable fish I too used to spear them back in the day but they are more fun to catch especially on light tackle

ec… I invision asian carp will be quite a bit like sporting clays….. *pull*!!!
then of course there could be a rash of installations of twin turreted radar guided miniguns using 10 guage with #6’s…. that should take care of them flying carp!

One positive about the Carp. The thing has so darn many bones or whatever that after 45 years on the River I believe it is the strongest fish I have ever caught. Walleyes surely don’t compare, Smallmouths jump a lot but that’s about it; yet the lowly Carp just keeps going and going. In shallow water sloughs a big carp is almost impossible to land as it heads for trees and the nearest shore. I could go on and on but they are a riot on a spinning reel.

no trouble intended, just the truth.

if there’s a crow sitting up in a tree right out my back deck, i’m gonna let a 22cal. fly at him. it doesn’t hurt anybody (other than the crow)and my neighbors never complain that i’m shooting too many crows. i just don’t see what the big deal is.

now i’ve never actually been carp shooting “out of season”, but i don’t see why it would be a problem if somebody did.

i’m not saying that you should just shoot anything that walks through your backyard or swims infront of your dock. i just feel that crows and carp are more of a nusciense. i know that they play a vital roll in each of their individual ecosystems or what not, but come on. do you honestly think that a few less carp or crows are going to hurt anything?

    that’s just what i think.

    Hi all, newbie here.
I have been visiting this site quietly for awhile. The main reason is for what this topic is all about. I am putting on a bowfishing tournament in Aug on pool 19 at Ft Madison.
    Should be a great time!
You guys that like to shoot fish in MN, the prez. of the Bowfishing Association of America lives in your state.
http://www.bowfishingassociation.com if you need info on where to go.
If your from IA and you like to shoot fish, we have about 5 tournaments this summer all over the state. http://www.bowfishiowa.com

The tournaments are a great expirience, and great for kids also.
Bowfishing is an awesome sport that combines hunting, fishing and boating all in one. Sometimes the action is so intense, you dont have time to drive the boat!!

Whether your a die hard like I am or a recreational bowfisherman, all the tournament we put on are for the people, its not about money, of course they pay out, but the door prizes and the braggin rights are the best!!!

If you like to bowfish, take some time to check out the websites I mentioned.

Sorry not trying to sound like an infomercial, but alot of people that like to bowfish, dont realize there are organizations that do the work to support, protect and liberlize laws for everyone to enjoy!!

    Thanks for listening.

Hey Jake,You should never shoot at crows in a tree with a 22. Where is that bullet going to stop? Now if it’s out in a field with a hill behind it PLINK.
