Hey guys. Here is a question to stimulate the minds!! I decided to do something odd tonight. Went to a lake with a buddy and fished for some bucket mouths??!!? Not a big fan of them but they sure are fun to catch especially the bigger ones! Had one strip off 150+ yards of line and then kept going!! He had to be pushing 7lbs. So here is the question. We were casting some salt impregnated grubs (antani sticking out ALL over) in a weedless texas rig. We kept getting bit off right before the hook. So the question is what does everyone think that these bit off’s were????? (Slimmers or eyes?) By the time I got a stinger hook set up some [censored] drove his boat no more then 20 yards from my boat so that put an end to all the bits. Some people have no sense at all. Well thanks for any thoughts.

well having fished similar baits in Iowa farm ponds where there were only bass and sunfish…. I have often seen bass do this… if they clomp down and you set the hook… you will tear the worm right off…..

but of course toothy critters COULD be involved up here.. and they sure have an easier time biting off….. in my experience Walleye will seldom cut anything off with their hit.. however… if they get it in their teeth and you set the hook they can do a neat job of slicing… Ive brought in minows that were cut clean like with a knife, from a walleye bite……

pike with the crazily excessive number of teeth CAN do it on impact at times….

I remember how much fun I used to have watching the pike feed at the DNR aquarium I worked at…. I found one pond that had gold fish, so I would net them and toss them in the tank… the Pike just LOVED them…. and they would hit them so hard there would be an explosion of gold scales… very much like fireworks!!….. but I guess I never seen them cut one in pieces…. (though Ive watched a piranha do THAT trick… interlocking teeth are NASTY!)……

Unless you have drag set extremely light, I have never had a bass run that much line. I have hooked bass up to 8 lbs and the only thing to run like that is a striper or wiper. With the biteoffs,,,,,,I would say a northern…..

With the mad dash and bite off I would definitely say you fell victim to the good ole’ Jackfish!!!!

Dogfish! No doubt in my mind! They are everywhere, and very VERY voraciuos lately. Got into some pitching plastics in tight to shore. And, those hummers got some choppers! Do not try to lip them like a bass! We’ll be calling you stumpy!

It could be dogfish, but I doubt it. Of the ones I’ve caught, never had one cut my line despite their teeth. Of course if the fish engulfs the bait then there’s a chance. I think it’s probably a pike or maybe a gar.

By the way, I was out on Linwood Lake in Anoka county yesterday fishing for crappies with a jig and minnow in a weedy bay when a big bucketmouth grabbed my bait. After some aerial acrobatics and a few dives under the boat I reeled him in. It weighed 5 pounds, 2 ounces, 20-1/2″ long. You should have seen the stomach on him! You could probably have fit a bowling ball inside his mouth. I’m not much of a bass fan, but that was a nice fish.

BTW-try to catch walleyes, I have come across numbers of HUGE bass in Lake Calhoun in Mpls. Lots of 5+lbers. Because of trolling motor only, the lake get very little fishing pressure.
