Take a look at this one. My friend Marina Bob Lansing knows how to catch the big fish. The Lansing Marina will be opening soon so you will have to stop bye and try to get Bob to give up his how to secrets.

I agree, you could at least kill the poor fish before you torture it like that. Nice Fish.

I agree with Mike W. Interesting looking boat. What kind is that?

As for the fish, it’s obvious the fisherman decided to keep it. And a far as notherns go, fish in the 5-8 pound range are great eating fish when smoked or pickled. (I know, that one looks to be pushing 9 or 10) But you never know, it my have inhaled a daredevil!! Not every picture posted here will be Al Linder quality, but all are welcome.

Note: I think we all know that you don’t want to hold any fish be the eyeballs if you intend to release it!

Too bad. That looks like a female pike swollen with eggs. Too bad she probably won’t be able to drop them. I’d guess now that 8-lber is gonna be eagle food unless he keeps and eats it.

    I agree, nice boat!

From what I can see, The boat looks like a Clark boat. Built in Bellview, IA.

Looking at the size of it’s head, it’s growth appears a bit stunted.

Jon J. is right,……………..but when you’re passionate about a sport, a species, ……………a past time…………..it just reflects an attitude that has bothered me for some time. I’m not offended this picture was posted, but I have to agree that it saddened me. How many walleye pics, regardless of being kept or CPRed, come with fingers in the eye sockets?

I know the guy probably had the right to kill the fish.
But the picture, err, well if PETA ever wanted a poster shot of why they are opposed to fishing…..

I found a northern this size that had inflamed eyes and was swimming belly-up on Thursday. NOT a happy experience.

What pool was this caught on?

It is not hugh; maybe a 10lb Northern ready to drop eggs. When my son was about 12 he caught a 40 incher and let it go rather then show me because he was afraid it would die on the stringer. Wish this guy would have done the same.

I am opinonated but you all will have to get used to that.

Nice fish ,nice catch, thanks for sharing the picture. I always hold the northern in the eyes when I intend to keep it. Northern is definitely one of my favorites. If we have really come to the point where we are serious about the humane way to treat fish to the extreme I just heard I would like to suggest you all start fishing with a line with no hook. Don’t misunderstand everybody has the right to an opinion , but so does the guy holding the northern that got ripped.

Way to welcome a new poster to the forum. I think some diplomatic education would have been more in order. I doubt if we’ll hear from kinda shy again. So w’ve lost a chance to do some good and created a lasting impression of those elitists from up the river.

That is very true i agree with yellowdog and mountain man, Hey unless you caught what gives you the right to rip on him like that, yeh they are just suggestions, but he is new to the board and hopefully will take it as constructive criticism and keep returning to the board with more pics.

Didn’t mean to offend anyone. Thought handling fish like that went out with the sidearms they used to carry to shoot musky when they got them close to the boat.
Didn’t mean to make anybody feel unwelcome here. Just my opinion.

“I know the guy probably had the right to kill the fish.
But the picture, err, well if PETA ever wanted a poster shot of why they are opposed to fishing….. ” that quote by stevo…what a joke so now we need to give a crap what they think….give the guy a break like nobody else on this site has ever done anything like this…of course its not the most pleasant thing to see but there sure are alot worse things seen on the river….geez

Are you all making me feel bad about posting the picture. I am sorry for offending some of you. Maybe we should start up a petition and submit it to the proper authorities to get the river shut down until all the different species are done spawning. It seems like the only solution. Many of you seen holier than thou and have quite the opinion for not even knowing the whole story. It was a nice fish and I thought you would all enjoy. A far as the way he is holding it, he is an old salt who grew up on the river and knows how much it hurts if you get your hand in their mouth. You can bet that that fish went in the deep fryer. By the way Bob can make a sheep head taste better than walleye.

Regardless of if a fish is going to be kept, it deserves to be treated humanely. Humane treatment DOES NOT include holding a fish by its eye-sockets.

Another reason not to hold a fish by its eye-sockets, is that uniformed people will do the same with fish that they release. We probably have all caught pike with “bugged-out” eyes from people doing this.

A better way to hold pike is to grip them behind the head, or with larger fish under the gill cover. Both methods are safe for the fish and the angler.

My intent wasn’t to make anyone feel bad and I apologize if I was interpreted as such. My intent was to comment on both sides, diplomatically, so I could express why I felt what I felt.
So, for diplomatic speaking, does anyone care to address this question? Walleyes have teeth and like to squirm? Why do you see this form of handling on pike and muskie but not walleye? Having the right or not having the right isn’t the issue so let that horse lie. I want to know what compels a man to handle one toothed creature different than another? And that question is the reason I posted at all. There’s a bad attitude toward pike and the guy in the picture isn’t necessarily of that attitude, it’s just interpretively inclusive in it’s image. I can tell you more stories than I care to remember of things witnessed or bragged on by other “sportsmen” in their treatment of pike.

I don’t mean to rip anyone anything here. But I wouldn’t mind an explaination either.

I totally agree with you. By the time I got to the dock the fish was already dead. The reason it looks like I have my finger pushed into it’s eye is because I lost half of that finger to a log splitter 10 years ago.

In Marina Bob’s defense, I fish with him almost daily. He was extremely pround of his big catch and I can assure you that it went to the deep fryer. The fish was dead prior to the photo also. If you want some of the best fried catfish on the river, stop by the Lansing Marina for some of Bob’s famous catfish. Hopefully he’s cooking that day.
