Well, since Tuck opened up the can of worms……..

There is nothing wrong with his Crestliner boat! However, on Saturday morning prior to the start of the WWA tourney at Red Wing where the air temp was 19 degrees, he had a little motor trouble……

Apparently, the oil thickened up to a point where the pump was not moving enough oil through the lines and the computer put the motor in “Safe Mode”. Basically, the computer shuts the motor down so us stupid humans cannot damage it. (Kind of like HAL in the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey. ) Anyway, the tech needs to check everything out and re-set the computer. (At least that what Tuck hopes)

Tuck and his partner fished the entire day, take off to weigh in on the kicker….

My Optimax acted up on me on Sunday. After full warm up, I powered her up on plane gradually and brought her to full throttle and then she cut out immediately. I got her started again only to have that deep gut wrenching engine knock. Needless to say, she is at the doctor right now. Thank God for warranty.

Ya ever get the feeling that boat motor designers did not have crazy river rats who fish in sub freezing weather in mind when they put these things together???

I had the same problems on Sunday. I Called the dealer and this is what they told me to do. Quit fishing. Ya right. Anyway. They said that in the colder weather you need to switch to a biodegradeable oil. Especailly with the Evinrude’s. This oil is thinner and will work better in cold weather. The dealer said that he has been getting hundreds call this week on the same problem for others. I can’t wait till it warms up.

    Hey Steve,

Gosh I hate to hear that, because I see it all over again. Exactly, exactly the same thing happened to my Merc. If the same result happens, you aren’t going to like it. It cost me a piston, all new rings, one sleeve, and a new oil pump. Good luck, hope this didn’t happen to you.

Oh yeah if almost forgot to tell you the biodegreadeable oil ONLY sells for $38 dollars a gallon. At least that is one dealers sale. That has to hurt the pocket book.

Hey I’m not sponsored by anyone But I have run my Suzuki’s in all kinds of weather..[censored] this weekend was a heat wave…Never had a engine not run from the Japs no matter what the weather..
Now I could talk about the motors I used to own. But I won’t cause it will only make my blood pressure go up…
Well Hope you get the Motors fixed
HEY We can just call for tournaments to be held in warm weather…
I bet you want to beat me by now so I’ll see ya on the water…
    Happy hooking

Item 1. Glad Dee Zee could fill in for me Hook, but save me a spot next month???

Item 2. RiverEyes, that is in Boston, (I am here for training) although, I did see a few witches tonight at a Pool hall in Londonderry! Funny story, a guy I was with got a beer spilled on him by a waitress…She bent down to wipe the floor, and he swung around with his pool sue, and CLOCKED her right between the eyes!!! In a minute, she looked like a unicorn! Not good!

Item 3. A lot of motors went down this weekend both here and in Illinois. Funny, I do not remember this happening with my other Ficht, or Optimax’s. My motor ran for 10 minutes before my problems began. It sucked. I did find out that I can get 5 MPH in my 20 foot boat going up river, and 6.5 going down with the 9.9!

Item 4. Thanks to Chappy, we finished in 7th on Sunday with 17 pounds and some change. We just needed 1 more decent walleye. Had to settle for sauger. Griz sure had’em figured out!

I need to find out if there are any Eyes in the Merrimac River here.

    Later!

One other thing to note in that cold of weather is your water lines. On Sunday we saw many motors without water coming out the pisser. I’m not a mechanic and I don’t know how ice blocking the lines in different places can affect your engine or water pump, but it can’t be good.

After leaving the water I lower the motor to get the water out and if it is going to be below freezing I will run the engine for a second or two to clear the lines. My question for everyone is can this do more harm than good? Everyone is aware of ruining a water pump impeller running it out of the water, but ice in the lines isn’t good either. Where does a person draw the line?

hi flyingfish, when it is very cold when I pull out. I also put the motor vertical, and let all water drain, then I run the motor briefly in forward and reverse, then I warm up the blow hole where the stream comes out with my hand, then I blew air in the line to just clear the tube of water, that pushes it back into the block. ( no wise cracks needed ). I have not had a problem the next time out, also water coming out pumpin. Jack.
