The same phenomena (males showing female characteristics such as egg production) has been found in alligators in Florida as well.

Note that the main source of estrogen, caffeine, Valium, and many other chemicals in our rivers is our own toilets. (As noted at the end of the article, prescription and over-the-counter meds of all sorts are also found in many rivers.) That makes solving the problem that much more difficult.

Because of my profession, this kind of stuff really interests me! Me working at a wastewater plant and my fiance’ being a nurse I asked her what measures Hospitals go through to rid the water of the pollutants and she believes NOTHING is done. What a source for all these medications! With people taking more and more meds everyday this will happen more often!!!

I am just wondering do people feel that this is a problem? or do you feel that this is just being blown out of proportion?

Because of the lobbying power that pharmacudicle companies and hospitals have this could take quite awhile before it gets the attention it deserves in congress!!

I didn’t read the whole article so maybe this was mentioned as well. One of the girls I work with said that that these properties are found in our tap water because the filters in a water treatment plant (not just waste-water treatment) cannot filter the synthetic hormones from the birth control pills (as mentioned in the story). One of her professors told the class this.

This may explain the man-boob phenomenon…
