    Hi guys,

Need to insure my new rig. How do you guys handle insurance? Do you schedule it on your homeowners or insure it privately? I received a quote from Boat U.S. but it really seemed high.

    Thanks,

    Dirk

I have a seperate policy with Farmers that provides good coverage. You can insure your gear (fishing items including tackle, rods reels, etc., are NOT covered by a boat policy)) by adding this coverage as a rider on your home owners policy.

    Ottertil,

I have recently jumped to another insurance company just for my boat, but basically file it the same way as James has stated above. The company I went with is Greater American Insurance company. This insurance coverage is designed specifically for fisherman of all levels which I love. The cost is slightly higher than what I was at before, but the coverage was well worth the extra money in my mind.

Mine too is with Greater American Insurance. I’ve been with them 3 years, and the 1 claim I did have wasn’t a hassle at all.

To my knowledge, you can’t insure a boat in your homeowner’s IF it has a motor above 25HP. Otherwise, you can include it in your homeowners. I will check with my wife. She works for Statefarm. I could be wrong so I will doublecheck.

The doublechecking has been done. That is the rule. I/O have to be 50HP or less to be covered in your homeowner’s.

I have a 115 hp on a 17 foot boat and it is under my homeowners policy. Millers Mutual out of Wis. Have had my vehicles with them for years and no one could ever beat them. Just went with them on my homeowners and boat and saved $$’s

I also have a 75 hp and its on my homeowners. Here is what I want to know…someone on another message board said many policies do not cover you on Lake Michigan. So if you are thinking of fishing Little Bay De Noc you may not be covered. I have asked my agent about this four times and he says he is still waiting for an answer from the company. Any one have any experience with no covereage on the Great Lakes???

I have a fairly expensive bass boat rig and have state farm boat insurance. I believe I only pay around $190 a year and have had zero problems with any claims I’ve had to make.

Thanks for all the responses. Boat U.S. wanted $202.00 a year to insure a 2003 Alumacraft Navigator 165 with a 50 hp Yamaha 4 stroke. I have had policies with them before on more expensive boats for less money. I don’t have any “blemishes” on my record either. I am going to follow up on some of your suggestions. Thanks again.

We just changed over to Progressive… coverage with personal gear coverage etc. was $290 for progressive and $330 for Boat U.S. this is 20k for the boat and 3.5k for personal gear.
