I will be out on Pool 13 for 4 days at the end of Sept camping on Thompson Island. I fish muli-species and may start looking for walleye. I have not been out on the Mississippi for several years and was looking for any current reports or water level concerns. Unless I hear otherwise, I figure I would hit the usual areas (Wingdams) and stump fields. I will be in my boat (Alumacraft Navigator 165) so, I will have access beyond the shorelines.

First let me welcome you to the site Fishingjon! This is a great place to learn, share, and have fun when not on the water!
I am not familiar with Thompson Island. Is that the Park at the Thompson Causeway? If so, I have not boated in that area in years, but I would suggest you excercise a lot of caution. The river here in pool 14 is about one foot below normal low summer stage, so I am sure it is low there as well.
I have heard some reports of crappies and gills going well north of Savanna, and same with trolling rip rap and wings. Water temps are dropping fast so things may change a lot in the next couple weeks.
Good luck and let us know how you do!

Welcome to the site Fishingjon. I don’t get down Thompson way, but can tell you that north of Savanna, we are doing well/okay on crappies with plastics. The stage is way down up at the north end of the pool. The temp has dropped 14 degrees in two weeks as well. Good luck and please let us know how you do!!

I ended up camping (with a tent) at the Mississippi Palisades (very nice campground) and launching out of Lazy River Marina area across the street from the Palisades. The water is low and it was odd to see the dying Lilly pads with stalks stinking a foot or more out of the water when the leaf is usually flat on the top of the water. Monday was very rough and the waves on the Miss were as high as 3-4 feet. Sat and Sun were great and I caught about everything (Nothing huge in size) 1 flathead cat, 2 channel cats, 1 walleye, 2 largemouth bass, 3 smallmouth bass, 1 drum, 1 carp. I will have the throw away camera put on the CD so I can post some pictures. Saw deer and eagles. That area is very nice. The only real problem was finding minnows to buy as many places were out by Monday and the bite was on minnows. All an all, lucked out on the weather and had a great timeā€¦just too short.

    Fishingjon,

I’m glad you had a good time. Next time, if you can’t find minnows, cross the bridge and turn right at the Hop-N-Shop. Just past the twin lakes, there’s a guy that sells minnows out of his garage.

I really like the Palisades as well. I hope you got up to the lookout area.
