went fishing on the wisconsin river this weekend – what was really surprising is that i caught 3 gar – i had never caught a gar or have even heard of anyone catching them – is it common for a person to catch gar or am i not paying close enough attention – by the way i was casting a floating rapala near where the wisconsin meets the miss.

Not so rare as it is difficult getting them hooked on anything. I’ve had them hit cranks before but they are so boney that they are really difficult to hook……………….which poses the question, how’d you hook ’em? For some real good gar info, CarpChaser and I forget who the other poster is, but there is another who can give you some pretty good info about these toothy critters! Also, some detailed info can be referred from http://www.garfishing.com.

It must be that the heat has Gar’s mouths softer! ) I’ve had them hit cranks before also with no hook-up, but a couple of weeks ago south of Prescott, my fishing partner caught a Gar on a Shad Rap.
