What happened to the La X river stage posting on the front page of FTR?
    Anybody??…Hello??….Buehler….Buehler….Buehler….

As of 1:00pm the flow was 39,600 & on its way down. Here’s to hoping for a low water spring!

Low water conditions are not the best for spawning fish. Great for fishing, but poor for the development of the eggs.

He’s talking about skinny fish, JC:

Al Stevens, assistant area supervisor at Lake City and a large lake specialist for Lake Pepin, says assessments going back to 1965 show that walleyes love high water.

“Over the years we’ve seen a lot of ups and downs in the walleye population,” Stevens says. “What shows up all the time is that water levels are very important. The relationship for walleyes is that they generally produce better year classes [generations of fish born during the same years] in years of high water.”

And floods don’t benefit all fish. The strongest year classes of smallmouth bass, for example, seem to come during years of low river water. Bluegills and crappies seem to thrive in stable water levels.

I’m guessing you could call Lake City management station and get specifics. The article doesn’t supply raw data.

Low water conditions may not be the best spawning conditions, but one thing is for sure the water won’t get any lower. Even though the river is about 1.5′ higher than the norm I doubt it will have any kind of negative impact on the system. Fish will spawn when and where they can.

Do you have a link to this?
I am interested int he lake vs river measurable effects as well as just why smallies like lower water. This seems to contradict what pool 9 has shown me the past 4 years but I have nothing to compare it to. Thanks again gianni.

Interesting link Gianni. I had read that about Walleye spawning classes for a long time, but never that smallies thrive on low water levels. I have also read that high water levels in the real early spring, that quickly drop, can have terrible effects on the Northern’s spawn.

HIGHWATER is great for the fishing what are you guys talking about!!!!!!!!! there are plenty of places from land to just nail the walleyes!!!!!!!! I wish the water would get as high as it did 2 years ago, but then again i don’t because i feel bad for everyone that lost something in some way due to the highwater, but man is the fishing just awesome when the water pertrudes to be that high, last year my land spots just sucked, pulled maybe a little over 10 walleyes out of them, the year before it was WELL over 100 with quite a few fish over 22 inches. i think many people can vouch for this.
