Cranking lines…

I know that this topic has been talked about before, but I was wondering if I could get another round of input. I have a heavier action rod w/ baitcaster that I use for trolling cranks and jigging deep (25-50′) water. I have been using mono, but it gets torn up so easy trolling shap raps through the rocks. I tried Fireline and Spiderwire each once, when I mainly trolled live bait, and hated it. But for shap raps and jigging, I hear that it is good. Should I revisit one of these brands?

What do you guys like to use for this kind of fishing?

    Thanks

Everybody has their personal preferences and I happen to love Fireline for most applications. It hasn’t failed me yet. Spiderfusion has broken on me and I’ve never used the Spiderwire. I’ve heard the Spiderwire doesn’t cast well and I like to do casting so that has prevented me from even trying it. For now, Fireline has my business. It’s strong, low memory, small diameter, no stretch response,………………..other than a tangled mess in the dark (caused by myself), I just don’t see a real avoidance factor.

    DaveB,

Personaly I would not use any thing on my trolling rod except for 20lb test 6lb diamater spider wire braid. I have used it for all most 3yrs now and know how deep each plug dives with the given amount of line and I do not have to replace it every year like the guys who use fireline LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would highly recomend getting a 7′ to 8′ medium action rod if you are going to troll with super lines. With a heavier action rod you will end up loosing a lot more fish than if you were using a softer rod.

    Just my 2 cents!

I hate to say it, actually I hesitated to write this because…..I agree with the kid. I use 20# Fireline for all my cranking applications-casting and trolling both. It rips through the water and is very abrassion resistant. It`s a great trolling line and the added sensitivity has made me a better crankbait fisherman than I have ever been. When casting cranks on wingdams, I find that I reel less and let the lure work on its own because I can feel every little thing that the lure is doing. Using Fireline, I can scour the face of a dam and get hung up less. If I do get hung, snagged baits are also easier to free because of the no stretch. Usually one bow and arrow snap frees the lure. I love Fireline. It is responsible for putting more fish in my boat. And I don`t give that much credit to too many products. I won`t fish cranks without it. And incidentally, I haven`t changed the line on my crankin’ and trolling rods in three years. I have “reversed” it on 2 reels, but that`s all. Beav

I use 14/6 Fireline for trolling, like Beav said, the ability to free lures is a big plus, plus the added sensitivity. I still use mono if I’m wanting to keep a lure up high in the water column.

Deep jigging I also use fireline, but usually on a spinning reel and there I use 8/3.

Dave, dont forget to put down a mono “backing” first or else it will spin on the arbor, or beav or stillapup said to put down some elect tape first as well…….

Beaver, what is the purpose of reversing the fireline. Does it get rid of the twist? Do you unwind it and rewind, or rewind from the opposite end?

I have had the same fireline on my jigging rods for two years, just went to it on cranking rods this year. I’ll never go back to mono! I am sure it is responsible for more fish, less tackle loss and much less frustration. The only problem I have had is jigging in shallow water, where I sometimes forget about the no stretch and get a little aggresive with the hook set. I hate coming up with a pair of walleye lips and no fish!!!

Reversing the line is transfering it from 1 reel to another to get at the unused line, saves big bucks.fireline has never let me down yet.lets hookup on 8/11-12

Basicly when you reverse the line, it helps if you have an extra spool for one reel. Then you reel the line in from one spool to another putting the unused portion from the bottom of the spool onto the top. Like John said, it saves you lots of money. Because of it`s no-memory characteristic, once you reverse the line, you have brand new stuff on top with no “coiling”. Something that you can`t do with mono. Beav

Give PowerPro a try. I use and like Fireline very much, but I’ve been converting to PowerPro. I feel it is a little rounder and has somewhat better handling qualities. It has the brute strength of a braid but these lines are still evolving and I feel strongly enough about PowerPro, especially for baitcasters to start replacing my FireLine. I still think the Flame Green FireLine is the best for jigging and line watching. For your baitcasters, try a spool of PowerPro.

Note: I use and recomend long and soft action rods for crankbaits using superlines.

    Good Luck!

Great idea Beav, I have reversed my double taper fly line but never thought of doing it on my fireline. Have some nearing 3 yrs old now, good time to reverse……thanks.

Thanks for the info guys! I definitely can use the money I save to buy a few more crankbaits. Ask John M., I go through plenty!

10# XT for trolling, and fireline for casting wing dams. Lawrence
