One more species to wrestle with…Muskies. I’ve never fished for them and most certainly don’t have any tackle to fish for them……until now. I bought some Leech Lake raffle tickets through a Musky related website and won a tackle box with some lures in it and a lure package. My wifes gonna hate me. Secretly, I can’t wait to use the stuff. HeHeHe. It pays to support your local, or in my case not-so-local chapters. I bought the tickets hoping to win a guided trip, oh well. I guess I’ll have bribe some EFN’ers to get me out after those toothy critters.

If you thought there were a lot of plastics to buy for walleyes….wait until you start buying bucktails, suicks, musky rods, line, plugs……..$14/piece lures can add up, but there is nothing better than a muskie hitting one of them baits or seeing a 50inch+ fish follow your lure up next to your boat. Man I love muskie fishing!

once you bit by the Muskie bug it’s a tough habit to break.
that’s a 44″er on my avatar. I know a great guide in the Hayward WI area. drop me a pm and I’ll give you his number.
bass are great and walleyes are fine, but for a pure adrenaline rush there is nothing like figure-eightin’ a bucktail at the side of the boat and getting that big girl to eat it!

One of my greatest memmories is getting a huge muskie on but having lost it. My deceased husband and I had gone to Potato Lake in Wi for a weeks vacation back in the late 80’s. I got fed up with catching those baby gills and perch. And went to casting a small red rattle trap. It about ripped the pole out of my hand when it hit. Was yelled at don’t horse it, don’t let it get in the weeds etc. So the battle was on. It finally came up out of the water making a huge spray as in pictures, down to the bottom and that was the end of the story pretty much. Except the hell I was catching for letting it get away. LOL
The picture is embedded in my mind though and the fun I had at the time.

they do get the heart pumping.
the first time I saw one I was fishing in the Eagle River area. didn’t know what the heck I was doing as I never had fished for them before. throwing a jointed Swim Whizz pulling it back to the boat, not paying much attention. I remember almost being done with the retrieve and lifitng it out of the water. I had my head turned when I heard/felt this terrific SPLASH!! The Muskie had come OUT of the water after that lure and hit the side of the boat. Needless to say it took a few moments for my heart to slow down. Soaking wet, I learned that always, ALWAYS figure eight your lure before taking it out of the water. Been hooked ever since.

I’ve splashed a few lures around in Potato Lake, WI a time or 3! No muskies but I got some good bass action out of her! I’ll most likely be up there again this summer……………my family has a cabin within a few minutes of the lake so I tend to hit Potato and Fireside for the muskie bite. One of the favored techniques for Potato muskies is #7 Shad Raps. A good testimony to that is the muskie board at The Narrows.

I’d be interested to hear if anyone has landed a musky recently anywhere near here…pool 3 through pool 8 ?

I haven’t personally but I know others on this site have reported (and some have even proven) catches in the Mississippi from Pool 3 all the way down to…………..Pool 10??……………was it? I forget! It was quite a ways south though and the frequency throughout is a rare one.

A few yrs ago a warden was checking Lics. when the guy next to him caught a small Musky. This was on pool #8 right @ the #7 dam. It wasn’t all that big, but it was a Musky.

There is a picture of a person with a musky caught off The Great Alma Fishing Float.Seems like it was a decent sized fish, and I think it was from last year.I saw it in the floats newspaper.
