I am sad to announce that I won’t be able to communicate with you guys as much as I have been in the past. We are going to be taking all internet access away in the next few days, unless it’s work related. Since I am the guy monitoring who’s going to sites they shouldn’t, I too should adhere to the rules. I will check in at night from home though. I didn’t want anyone to think I was being stuck up for not answering privates. See later!!

Well, I’m sure you will be first to a long list of agencys and companies removing their employees access. This is a good topic. From my stand point, If a guy gets his work done and hopping on the web doesn’t interfere with job performance, is it viable or justifiable to remove access? I don’t think so!! Why were “breaks” established? Everyone needs time away from the stress of work, especially during the work day!!! Waterfowler, you can still think fishing while at work, they can’t take that away from ya!!!

    Keep the rods bendin’!!!

Our web site access and time is monitored regularly at my place of employment. I’m sure it’s necessary with some individuals though. I scan this site almost every day either during my “lunch” or while on “break” and once in a while from home. Great information and personalities posting every day. A good stress reliever. I agree with Jim’s comments! Everyone needs a work-break once in a while. …But,… I also believe it has a lot to do with personal “work ethic.” Everyone’s work ethics are different. If you are not “cutting-it” with your workload, it’s probably not a good idea. On the other hand, if you don’t have enough to do and are surfing all day, there’s a problem with that too. As long as you complete your everyday business without wasting your employers time and money, surf at an appropriate/acceptable time (and keep your surfing clean),…. I see no problem with it. It’s unfortunate that it’s starting to become a business trend these days. I expect something similar from my employer in the future. By the way, this post is from my home. I have the day off!

    See ya ’round waterfowler.

    Hey Waterfowler,

Sounds like you are the IT guy there….How about making it MANDATORY that each monitor has FTR as their home page?????? Kind of like in school, you could chew gum if you brought enough for everyone, right?

    Just a thought…

From what I saw last night on pool 2 Waterfowler was the one being out-fished. By the way, thanks to DaveB for putting us on some fish late in the evening. We were getting pretty frustrated until he showed ys the light!

My place of employment took our internet access for recreational use away a 18 months ago. I won’t mention the name of the company, but they are based in St Paul, very large corp. They conduct annual surveys to determine what employees deem strong and week points of their policies and such. Within 6 months of the last survey, they reinstated “guarded” recreational use for us. It seems a great percentage of employees use it as a stress reducing escape from the grind. It is great to work for a company that responds to employees concerns when they are voiced in numbers. I believe many more would do the same if they were aware of the true benefits they indirectly recieve from their workers being able to “unwind” for a few minutes on the web!

As a guy who owns his own small business I have to say that it is disheartning to go into an employee’s office and “catch” them surfing the web. Productivity, after all, is productivity. Yet I understand that the employee needs to have an outside source of letting go from time to time. When it you get to the bottom line it ends up being about profit and that needs to be respected. If I were a shareholder in your company, and owned a million dollars of your stock, I would not like the fact that you took time out from your job to be on FTR. Sorry to be less than supportive but I am the guy who pays the bills. However, if you it during your lunch break, or came in early ahead of hours and did it, no problem. I cannot see how they would restrict you from doing that. I greatly enjoy your posts to FTR and hope that they will continue as I always learn something from them.

I very much understand the bottom line message as well. My wife runs her own small business, and I realize how tight things can be from time to time. We are only allowed to use company computers while on break or lunch. It really does increase productivity when people are able to leave the work place behind for a little while during the day. Refocusing on the task at hand always seems easier after a little time of letting ones mind wander!

The key for our plant is LIMITED use, we are monitored and filtered for content. On average, I would say the employees who recreate on the web spend 10-20 minutes per day during breaks. Those found to be abusing the system are disciplined or disallowed future use. We just have to remember our primary reason for being there is to turn a profit!

I’m back……. Anyway Tuck, yes I’m the IT manager so it doesn’t look good for me to have FTR up on the screen when other employees walk in the office. So I’m trying to abide by the rules. We got hit pretty hard with the SirCam virus so it prompted a lock down.

I imagine once we have a better handle on things we might be able to persuade management into a stand alone machine for everyone to use on their breaks. What I miss is the T1 access, dial up stinks!!!

T1? Get ’em to go fiber!!! It’s only money! LOL! Do you know if your T1’s come in on shielded or copper? If it’s shielded, you boys are going to want an upgrade within the next nickels worth of years.
