Mushroom head jigs

Where can I find some regular old 1/4 oz mushroom head jigs with collar? Looked all over. Not even Cabela’s or Gander carry them. I just want something to rig grubs and stuff.

You can check out DO-itMolds. I think it you can just add .com to that and it will take you there. Looks like this is the place to get molds from.

I bought the mold and got a half pail of tire weights at my favorite tire store. They turn out great although it took a little while before I could fill the smaller sizes perfectly but I just kept trying. They’re pretty cheap to make this way, and there are no sad moments when working heavy snaggy areas that frequently keep jigs. Barlows and Janns Netcraft also have this mold.

Maybe you already know about this trick but some newcomers to pouring lead may not… If you have problems getting the mold to fill you can try ‘sooting’ the mold by holding a wax candle flame close to the mold, causing the cavities to coat with black soot…. This trick has proved very beneficial when pouring smaller jigs and they all release a lot easier too…

I did not know that sooting trick, but will try it on the tiny versions. I always got good fill eventually but it was related to getting the mold up to high enough temperature. Thanks for the tip.

If your applications include ring worms, super doos and Kalins, try the Knuckleball jigs from Fin-Tech. I have been having tremendous luck with them. I have been using them exclusively for two weeks now with a ton of success.

I just sent Mike Huppert a “SOS” because I need more in a hurry! The glow as Flick had mentioned, and also the orange and black have been super for me!

You’re right about getting your molds up to heat so the smaller sizes will fill better. I usually do a few pours with no hooks in the mold to build up some heat in the mold.

Another factor to consider is using the softest lead you can find – old pipes from the scrap yard work well. My understanding is that wheel weights are a somewhat harder alloy (that’s what the ammo reloaders I know say anyhow.) If I get too many partial pours adding softer lead does seem to help. Though I’ve never been one to pass up free wheel weights either!

Haven’t tried Barc’s sooting method, but will keep it in mind. Does the soot hang on the finished jig, or does it absorb into the lead? If you paint your heads does the soot seem to effect how the paint adheres?

If anyone is interisted I do have a good supply of lead on hand. I get it from old cast iron pipe joints. Shoot me a Pm if interisted. Maybe a few jigs in return would be good.

Lead temp & mold temp are the critical factors for me – when I have problems getting the jigs to release or fill I always try the soot and it usually seems to help – especially with wheel weights and poor quality lead… Poor mans mold release I guess.. I was in a bait shop that rented out molds in Waterloo, Ia back in the early 80’s and saw the black on the molds and the guys there told me about the candle trick…
You will see a little black on the first couple afterwards but it quickly disappears…. I don’t paint many of my jigs but I haven’t noticed a problem when I do..

I also would have to back TUCK & FLICK on the Nuckle Ball Jigs. Don’t forget about the Zone-R, great for the rivers.

Hey Tuck, real easy to get addicted to the Nuckle Ball jig, don’t you think. I hope it will be your confidence jig like it is for me. Welcome aboard http://www.fin-techco.com

About 40 miles out of my way, Bill. The GM in Lacrosse is a short way from I-90 when I come up from Illinois. Thanks for the tip anyway. You too, D Man.

Jeff, I tried to order yesterday but when I clicked on ‘Add to Cart’ got an error message. I e-mailed Mike about it and he replied back no error from their side. I’m going to e-mail him again with the exact wording of the error message and the URL.. Cant communicate on the phone because I’m hearing impaired. But not to worry, I’ll get them.

Are mushroom style heads better than round? I have painted and tied 700 rounders this last month and am now wondering if I made the wrong kind. What are your thoughts on mushroom vs. round? What conditions are each better for? I have had the best “luck” with the round but I might just have to try the shrooms, by the sounds of it.

Anyone remember a report on fishing different styles of jigs. I think I read it last year some time. It had alot of talk about the difference of vertical jigging and pitching jigs. If some one finds it bring it back up. Before I read this I fished nothing but round jigs. There is alot more than round jigs out there.

Not yet, but I’m working with Mike to get it resolved. I sent him the URL of the page I tried to order from and also the URL of the error message page. He’s going to talk with his webmaster and get back to me.

All smiles now. I went back to your link after I posted above, This time before clicking on ‘Add to Cart’, I turned off my firewall and AV. I have to do that at certain sites when ordering online. I’m going to e=mail Mike and let him know problem is fixed.
