After months of observing I finally had a day of fishing worthy of a post.

Just want to give a vote of gratitude out to those on Pool 4 yesterday. After hearing the horror stories of boats buzzing through the pack at 50 mph or people anchoring in the drift pattern, I found most everybody well-behaved and even cordial on the water yesterday (at least the “below the Y” crowd, if I’ve got my locations correct).

It was our first time up near the dam, and we had a great time on what appeared to be a slower day for some. Caught nine dandies 16-19 inches, and released a 24-incher, all grand-looking beauties. Even the smaller ones were thick-backed.

Also, I know it’s been said a million times here, but James and Dustin seem to be top-notch gents. James was very cool in the midst of hundreds of boat-launchings, wrenching on boat motors, and scooping minnows. He didn’t try to force his products on us, even though I grabbed two fistfuls of plastics as soon as I walked through the door. (Sorry, James, the hi-tech minnow on a #6 did the trick for us this day.)

Dustin also approached us out of the blue on the water for a “howdy” and quit chat.

So we’re hooked, and will definitely be back.

Gald to see you had a good time and caught some fish. I can be pretty chatty and snoopy out on the river, most of the guys I talked to had a pretty tough day, so it sounds like you did pretty good.

What kind of a boat were you in? I talked to a lot of anglers on the river that day. Would like to put a face to a name

Nothin’ snoopy about it. I don’t mind a quick conversation with someone new after eight hours in a boat with the same person.

There were two of us in a 16 foot light blue and white Sylvan.

Sammy! Welcome to the message board! I see you’re from the Chetek area and I wonder how much fishing you do in that area? My family has a cabin about 20 minutes from Chetek and if you’ve anything you can share about the fishing in that area, I’d be downright grateful!

    Stillakid,

Thanks for the welcome and all the info. I actually just moved up here a couple years ago, so I’m still getting acquainted.

From what I’ve seen and heard, the Chetek chain is pretty well packed with lm bass. Last summer I spent most of my time on upper Prairie here in Chetek. No pigs, but I did pretty well on decent fish. They’re scattered throughout the lakes, too, so don’t confine yourself to Prairie.

Also ventured over to Long Lake and that chain in Chippewa County. Didn’t do as well over there, but there’s a lot of water and I need more time there.

Where’s the folks’ cabin? Also, do you know of any consistent smallie lakes in the area, an hour or two out is fine?
