I snagged a fish on Sunday on pool 4. My camera battery took a crap on me otherwise I would have taken a pic. Here’s the description.

    About 7-8 inches

    Forked tail

Silver/Blue scaled body with dark lateral line.

    Sucker mouth and head

    Stunk like a tulipee

Derek? Did it look like this?

That was my first thought too John…but the sucker mouth through that thought off…I’m still thinking sheephead or laundry….

    A sheephead doesn’t have a forked tail
A moon eye doesn’t have the sucker type mouth
    It’s not a shad…
    Silver rules out carp…

    hhhmmmm…..

your not talking about a bass are you???

Sounds like a skip-jack to me. Although I think you MN boys have a different name for them. Did the scales fall of very easily?

Maybe a buffalo??? I used to archery fish for carp and get a couple of those once in a while. They really reek and I know that they are a Blue-Silver color. And look alot like a carp.

I did some image searches on google and i think it was either a buffalo or a lake herring. Buffalo seems more native to the river. Lake herring are more native to the great lakes.

    Thanks guys

    Description
The mooneye is a medium-sized fish, usually reaching 11-15 inches in length and 1-2 pounds in weight. It has a flattened slab-sided body that is silvery in color. It has several distinguishing characteristics including: large, prominent eyes; a short snout; smooth, rather than saw-edged, scales on the belly; and a small flap (called a pelvic axillary process) located just above the pelvic fin. In addition, the mooneye has teeth on the tongue and on the middle of the roof of the mouth.

Most likely a Roach Back Buffalo, maybe a white carp.

Could it have been a blue sucker? They are torpedo shaped when smaller, while buffalo are shaped more like carp. Blue suckers also have a long “nose”. Used to be fairly common in the Miss. R. Highly prized commercially, also known as the “sweet sucker.” Fairly rare.

Its possible, it was pretty small. Hard to tell from that pic. But thanks for posting. Interesting looking fish. I was reading there are over 90 species that swim in the river. Good work out for the depth finder.

Not really. This thing looked like a sucker that spawned with a spottail shiner.
