Seining for Bait

Does anyone do this? I check out the regs and it sounds like you can catch fish designated as minnows and keep 2 dozen. If you do it in a lake designated as having and invasive species, you can only use it for that body of water…well duh. There are also limits to net sizes and what not.

I am just wondering if others have or do it and if there are any special regulations I am missing? Maybe you have some tips? I know it seems like a pain when you can just go to a bait shop and get 2 doz minnows for a couple of bucks, but I thought it might also be kind of fun. I did it once in Florida for shiners. For a nature boy like me, some of the other stuff you pull up is just as facinating.

Hey mplspug I use to seine minnows up in northern mn. for alot of years. There are certain regs on it in the fishing regs. It was always a blast doing it with my kids. Get two broken hockey sticks and tie one end of the seine top and bottom to each stick. If your in a creek go with the current. One guy close to shore one out deeper.Try to keep the net on the bottom as much as poss. going down stream then have the guy out deep curl in towards shore and bring the bait up. In most creeks up north we would get shinners, suckers. chubs and a minnow with an orange stripe on them-worked great on the walleyes.anyways have some fun. Oh run if you get a snapper in it!!!!!!

That’s pretty funny because that is one of the reasons I brought it up was I can remember doing when I was younger. We had a net between 2 hockey sticks too. Actually, now that I think about it, one of my brothers still has it I believe.

    Hey! Welcome Mr. Duluthian!

I haven’t been smelting since the 70’s. Are the runs pretty good? We always went to Lutsen.
