Back on the 13th of this month TheDman posted a picture of a huge Musky caught on the big pond, there was a lot of speculation on the weight of the big boy. I found a formula on the Internet for weighing fish without a scale, here it is.

    WEIGH FISH WITHOUT A SCALE

With the flood of Catch & Release Contest entries we’ve received in recent weeks, most with length-only measurements, the burning question is: “How much did my fish weigh?”

Here are some proven formulas to use when you don’t have a scale in the boat.

    General Formula (all species):

Multiply length x girth x girth and divide by 800.

Big Bass (longer than 22 inches, fatter than 21 inches):

Multiply length x length x girth and divide by 1,000.

If you only have the length:

Bass: Multiply length x length x length and divide by 1,600.

Walleyes: Multiply length x length x length and divide by 2,700.

Bluegills/Crappies: Multiply length x length x length and divide by 1,200.

Muskies/Pike: Multiply length x length x length and divide by 3,500.

Using this last formula that Musky which was 55 inches long would weigh in at 47.5 POUNDS! WOW THATS A LOT OF FISH!!!!

Great info! Even if it’s not exact, it should put you within a few ounces of the actual weight! I just printed a copy of that to tape to the lid of my tacklebox!

Also include a calculator to make the figuring easy.

The article I read in the Appleton Post Crescent stated that the big girl is 60 inches long and has a girth of 30 inches. It was entered in the Post Crescent Master Angler contest for catch and release. With the formula listed, that puts her at 61 pounds plus. WHAT A FISH, and she is still swimming!!!

JimRK: Do you know of another huge muskie? This post was referencing the 55″ that was caught in Mille Lacs(pool 1 of the Rum River). If there is another , do you have a link to the photo?

    Thanks

I read a report yesterday from McCoids stating they have seen the same “jaws” 5 times since Terry first caught it. I’m gonna be up there this weekend and if I see a monster like that I’d probably just soil my shorts. What a trophy, heh!!

    Fishhunt58,

Any chance we can look up other formulas for other species? You know, carp, trout, catfish, sturgeon, etc.?

The place I got the info from was the Walleye Searchers News letter I will have to ask the editor where he got it.
