I use them a lot in spring and summer, especially on wing dams and flats. I mix things up a lot depending on conditions, but generally use #4 or 5 blades, hatchet in dirty water, Colorodo or Indiana in stained. Colors run the gammit, but ya can’t go wrong with Chartruese, Orange, Firetiger, Green, or mixture of the above. Beads, I like 5-7 mm beads, faceted generally. I think they make a little clatter which can’t hurt. Usually at least two, as many as 6.

Line, I use 14# Vanish. Best I’ve found so far. Don’t try superbraids, they make some very unfriendly tangles the first time they twist or hang up a little and pop loose!

    Good luck. Hope this helps!

    In addition to John’s tips…

I like a #2 Gami hook and a #10 trebble as a trailer. I like 10/12/14 pound Trilene XT in the green color.

I use a lot of silver and gold blades….

Dose the length on of the line depend on your set up?

WHEN I WAS FISHIN WITH THEM A LOT I WOULD MAKE THEM PRETIED AT 4′ WITH A SWIVEL,I COULD THEN ADD VERY EASLY OR GO SMALLER. USED AS SHORT AS 3′ AND AS LONG AS 10′. THE DROPER MAKES A DIFF. ALSO . I USED BOTT. BOUNCERS ALOT.

One thing I forgot to mention, make sure you have enough beads to keep the blade from fowling on the hook. Also, sometimes hammered blades seem to work better than smooth, and vice/versa. I find it really fun to experiment with a variety of set-ups after I’ve patterned fish, just to see what happens with the different blades, colors, styles, etc.
Also, another option to adding individual beads is to buy bead stacks. They provide enough spacing without having to thread on a bunch of beads.

I’ve had good luck with the northland holographic blades, and the blades with the holes in the center of them.

I like Jon’s idea of a treble for the back hook.
