Fireline Problems

Yet another question from me! Been having problems with my spinning reels that are rigged with Fireline. They work fine for a while, then I begin having trouble with the entire body of line turning on the spool as one unit. Loose all ability to retrieve under any pressure. What am I doing wrong? I tie and spool the line like I always have monofilament. Never encountered this before. The line has only been on the spool a month or so. I ran all the line off the spools and rewound them tightly, but it only helps for a short period. Any ideas?

    Rooster,

Most people have monofilament backing on their Fireline setups. Start spooling with mono then tie on your Fireline and continue as normal. I’m not quite so tedious. A simple high quality tape strip or anchoring the line in the spool tab is all I’ve had to do to keep mine working fine. The mono backing is just another form of anchor but I hate tying lines together!

I hate to say it, but the kid is right. Wind some mono backing on the spool first. The mono won`t slip like the Fireline does. Connecting the two lines is easy…..tie back to back uni-knots. The harder you pull the tighter the knots become. I`ve never had this knot system come apart or slip. Look me up at the get-together and I`ll show you how its done. Beav

Man, I should have known to use mono backing!! Gotta start using this coconut on my shoulders for something besides a hat rack I think! Thanks StillaKid, Beaver.

Beaver, if I can make the get together I will surely look you up!

I hate to say it………..(grin)…………., but Beav is right. The uni-knot is pretty simple and you’ll break before it does! Not really, but almost. However, unless you’re trying to stretch how many reels you can rig from one spool of Fireline, an anchor is all you need. The reason even a simple piece of tape will work is it holds the end good enough to get you through the first 3-4 cranks. After that, every rotation of the crank increases pressure against the anchor. It will never come loose because it only has to withstand about a half ounce of pressure to hold the end, but you’ve spooled on a few pounds of pressure. It’s a little scientific marvel that literally erases a step. But Beav’s method is a proven one and will never fail you. It’s a good thing to learn in case you don’t have any tape around!

I use a wrap of electrical tape on the spool. Then tie the fireline directly on.

I use a drop of superglue and glue the line right to the spool. It comes off easily when you respool. Simply tie it on the spool, put a tiny amount of glue on it, wait til it dries and spool away.

A plus for using mono backing and using the back to back uni-knot is that it will save a few bucks worth of line to spool up two reels.

    Good luck,

    Beav,

will the uni-knot work with fireline & leadline?

To attach fireline to leadcore, pull back the braided cover on the leadcore 4 or 5 inches, cut off the lead, then tie a overhand knot near the end. Take the fireline and tie it on above the knot in the leadcore. Trim the knots close.
