Say Bill, Let me tell ya what happened last Sunday !!! Well
It really all started out last thursday ! Bill my fishing buddy for many, many years and myself decided to fish the river. Got me a baggie and put a couple of each color Super Doos and a few Ring worms in it and put 6 or 8 drops of Kick Bass garlic scent in it ! Well by Sunday the scent had plenty of time to penetrate the plastic. When I opened the bag I’m sure the boat next to us could smell it, and they were 25 yards away. Bill is a live bait man and he was pulling a 3-way with a 1/2 oz stinger jig with minnow and a floater flag with minnow, the standard go to rig this time of year. Bill was catching most of the fish on the bottom on the stinger. Well, Me wanting to try something a little different I set up with a 3/8 Knuckle ball jig with Kick Bass impreginated purple Ring worm on the bottom, and on the flag I used a small gold “Hoggie” Walley Willow Spoon with a Kick Bass Impreginated white Super Doo. Well I’m here to tell you that it’s not nessessary to have live bait !! I caught more fish than Bill, and by the end of the day I didn”t have any white Super Doos left and Bill smelled like Kick Bass Garlic scent !!!

Geeeees Rich… I would have thought you’ld surely share the story about the last time we were out in your boat and I caught all the fish that day using this Kick’n Bass on the plastics…. Oh, perhaps you did not want that one told…. sorry! He Haw, He Haw
Na… it is so strange to have a product that is “working” and have “slim to none” personal creditability, cause I am the one selling it. That is exactly why I sent hundreds of tube/samples out FREE with the plastics kits from B-Fish-N from the EFN Outlet Store. I figured that if this scent was working so good for me…. sooner or later you guys would have to jump up and blow the whistle/ring the bell/bang the gong!
I have been into scents a long time… and have chosen carefully the product to first place into the EFN Outlet… it is truely some good stuff. A bit “stinky”… but good!

The new sent does sound promising but a more controlled study would be interesting to hear about. Here is how it could be done: Get someone who jigs with two of the exact same rods, with the same reel and line. Put the exact same weight & color jig and plastic on each line, but only put the sent on one of the plastics. Then switch rods in each hand every 15 minutes. Simply keep a tally of all the fish (and size) caught on the scented plastic vs. the non-scented plastic. After doing this a few days one could statistically state how much better (or worst) the sent worked for them.

Sean Colter over on FTL has been reporting good success with this product in ice fishing applications. He’s watching the fish’s reaction to two seperate offerings, one scented, one not. I’d love to see something like that taped and I understand that can be done fairly easy through an aqua-view or similar camera. Now that would be the ultimate study in my mind… side by side, through the ice, same baits, fished a few feet apart. The fish’s reaction and preferences recorded on tape.

Me? Camera? I’m just a smelly river guy and you work in the fishing dept. at Gander! Shouldn’t you have a pair of these things by now?…lol When I said it could be easily done, I may have over-simplified things a bit but it’s very do-able. You’d need a way to run a vcr off a 12 volt power supply…. that would be the biggest hassle. I actually think Bob Carlson or Tim Hukriede have a vcr set-up for use in an ice house… this would be the ticket. To me, seeing the reaction of the fish between the two offerings would be the true test and to get it on tape would cement the deal for me. I’ve tried a bunch of scents in the past and have been OVERWHELMINGLY UN-impressed with results. What really has me interested in this stuff is Dustin’s done some playing with it on the water and he saw a very noticeable preference for plastics dipped in this stuff. That was one day, one trial but Dustin’s a good stick and a good judge between something that works and a gimmick. So his initial succeses have me interested.

Time will tell and I’ll enjoy the playing to find out!

Sounds like a digital camcorder that has the same inputs as a VCR would be the ticket. Mine runs about 3 hours on a battery charge (during summer temps) but this might be a good alternative to rigging 110V in an ice shack for taping purposes. Just my $.02

I’ve fished with two products that have a heavy garlic/salt impregnation. Tubes offered by ISG and “Chompers”. Found that on smallmouth (didn’t target walleyes) that the garlic scent exclusively outfished non-scented lures. The northern pike sure the hell ripped up those plastics also.
    just my two “scents”

James, you are right! I remember the day I called and told you about the scent. I had some of the free samples that Dave sent out to me with my last plastic order. I used them that time on the superdoos. I had 2 rods as described above, with the same line, color superdoo and jig head size. Out of the 20 decent fish I caught that afternoon all but 2 came on the superdoo with scent

As you know I’ve never really messed around with scenting plastics until this day. Was I surprised? Most definitely! I know as well as most of us do that every day is a little different, it just so happens on this day having the scent really paid off for me. I still try baits with scent and with out.

One thing I have noticed with my limited experience with the scent is that on days when the bite has been a little slower it has put more fish in my boat, the scented baits get more takers. On days when everyone is catching and the bite is going gangbusters then it hasn’t seemed to matter a bit.

Am I believer? So far yes! It all comes down to one little thing, “DETAILS”. One day they want it and the next one? Maybe they don’t. It pays to experiment.

In years past I used to by tackle from Bill Binkleman Tackle. He was the pioneer of using florescent paint on jigs. He sold an Anise oil product that was very effective. I used to sneak it on my plastic baits without telling my boat partner and often out fished him by a large margin till I tossed him a tube of scent.

    Swany,

Major typo on my part! I went back and edited my post to say what I wanted it to. Guess I should start proof reading before hitting the next button

Oh, I almost forgot, I’m not worried about you out fishing me, your gonna get rusty chasing all those saltwater creatures

Remeber not to get to hasty as I still drive the boat and can easily make it impossible for you to catch next to nothing

My first try with this new scent last weekend did not bring as good of results. Tryed fishing a number of plastics without scent with just a few takers. Same results with the scent on those same plastics. We finally found a plastic they wanted. I never did try any scent on it to see if I could of made it more productive. Looking forward to trying this again tommorow.

Dusty:You can lead a horse (shi-) Stick to the water, but he’ll never catch fish. On the other hand, You can take a good Stick and give him horse (shi-) postion….and he’ll still catch fish… …but since you do drive the boat….EEEMMM….I’m sorry…… ..(GOD that was a hard pill to swallow )

I have been using Kick-n-bass Crawfish for over the last year on all my plastics for bass. Made my old man a true believer in the stuff one day last summer. Same line, same hooks, same Brush Hogs, but the Kick-n-bass outfished the unscented probably 8-1. Now, it doesn’t work all the time, but I truly believe some days it makes alot of difference. And you know how confidence goes too!!

I tried the garlic but DAMN, that stuff is strong. DO NOT get it on yourself if you plan to stop anywhere after fishing!!! Also stinks up the boat pretty well. Going to try the Shad/anise more this summer too.
