I just stepped onto some skunk spray with my favorite and not so cheap outdoor shoes with rubber soles. Stepped on a rug in the house and man!!!!! It smelled like right now. I threw the rug out but is there something I can scrub the soles with to get rid of the smell?

I’ve heard that tomato juice is suppose to work. An ol’ wives tail? I don’t know, but it is worth a try.

I heard that walking through a pig barn is a good way to cover up skunk odor. lol

Seriously though, I’ve also heard about the tomato juice cure but if that doesn’t work you might want to try sprinkling them with baking soda. I know an opened box in a refrigerator helps with the odors, I don’t know how it would work on shoes though.

not sure if it will work but you could try some “scent killer”spray for hunting!

There is some stuff out there called natures miracle. It’s to take odors and nutralize them. Worth a try. Works on pet odors in carpet.

I actually read in a newspaper article some years ago that tomato juice does work but it takes several applications and it’s messy to work with. I don’t know that I’d want to venture tomato juice in a carpet cleaner! If your shoes are the only dilemma, I’d think anything is worth a try! I don’t know how similar this manufactured juice is to the real thing but I do remember that article saying that for skunk sprays, there was a much better option than tomato juice but darn it all………….I can’t remember what it referred to!

Your local veterinarian should have a good recommendation or two because they do treat dogs for learning the hard way. Again, not sure how close “juice” is to the real thing, but again, I think it’d be worth a try.

Good luck and best wishes to ya!

    Hydrogen Peroxide.

For the carpet, apply a good dose and wash out. For the dog, apply a 50/50 mix with water in a spray bottle. Several back-to-back applications will completely remove the stink!

I used to have a bottle of product called “Skunk Buster”. I had to use it on my clothes several times a season when trapping fox and coyote. Lent it to a friend whose dog got hooked up with a skunk and never got it back. But it really does work. No masking. It actually killed the odor. Got it from M & M Fur in South Dakota. I’ll see if I can find the ph. #.

Be careful with that Peroxide on the carpet. It is a bleach.

I recalled hearing about a better solution than tomato juice for a hound that has been zapped by the striped kitty… Searched on the web and found numerous ‘recipes’ that were similar to the one on the following link but this one had the chemist’s explanation on the ‘how&why’… Deskunking Dogs…… It might be worth a try on the rug and those boots if you have run out of alternatives….

    Barc,

Just read some very similar info as your link:

    1 quart hydrogen peroxide
    1/4 cup baking soda
    1 tsp dish washing liquid

Mix together and use immediatly. Rinse well.

I’ve tried that recipe. It comes out like a gooey paste. I learned that the hydrogen peroxide was the part of the recipe that actually worked. Mix 50/50 with water. Spray on a good layer, let sit for a minute, rinse off. Wash off with Dog shampoo. Repeat the entire process 3 times.

There is some stuff called “Skunk off” that works without bleaching. My fishing buddy had his springer bring home a striped friend while he was on vacation for two days last year. The dog managed to drag it into every room in the house before he got home.
