Have any of you seen this show. He acts like he’s never fished before or has a good drunk on all the time. I catch a little of it some time just for a laugh.

John Gillespie What a joke

I love his show! Finally a show that isn’t just bass after bass. How boring is that. I think his excitement is great! I like when he’s slapping people on the back and giving hi-fives. Fishing is supposed to be fun. He fishes rivers a lot and often catches interesting species like sturgeon, quillback carpsuckers, buffalo etc.(accidently, but it’s still cool) Only Innercity Fishing in Mpls. fishes those species on a regular basis. Gillespie’s show is also filmed about a week in advance which can often put you on a hot bite. This is a great show! Vern
July 10, 2001 at 2:58 pm #231237I agree with Vern. I’ve met John (hoisted a couple of martoonis at the Fourth Base in Milwaukee with him) and what you see on TV is what you get. He promotes fishing in general and in Wisconsin mostly. He’s been great for getting vacation dollars to Wisconsin. What’s wrong with that?
He genuinely gets excited and jacked about fishing. I also think it’s a great show.AnonymousGuestPosts:July 10, 2001 at 3:12 pm #231239You know I can appreciate his enthusiasm too but he needs to dial her down a notch and give his talent a chance to talk a little too. I think its rude when he keeps cutting them off all the time.

July 10, 2001 at 3:27 pm #231241I do like his show because it’s local and yes it is not just 5lb. bass after 5lb. bass in a stocked pond. I often think he is over-board when it comes to his enthusiasm(sp). My better half asked me what was wrong with him when she happened into the room recently while I was watching. She wanted to know if I acted like that in the boat everytime I caught a fish. I said of course, I wet my pants everytime I get a fish.
All in all, he has a good show and I enjoy watching it. Maybe I just have “fishing” envy and thats why I choose to dig on him a little. You have to give him credit, he can act like that and continue to get sponsors and air shows week to week, he must be doing something right.
July 10, 2001 at 3:48 pm #231243I happen to get a charge out of his show! He is very enthusiastic for sure! To his credit, he is one of the few shows that show you everything they are using, Plus, the shows are from recent footage not taped from a year ago! This demonstrates the ups and downs of fishing. They don’t always catch mammoth fish, but they sure are having FUN doing it! PLUS, he has shows that run through out the year, including ICE-FISHING!!!!!!!!!! As far as having a loud mouth, it’s his show!
July 10, 2001 at 3:59 pm #231247It is on Fox/net or MSC. I believe it is 9 or 9:30am Sundays, but I believe it is changing to 10:30. He also has a magazine out. Not bad, but it needs more work than his show!
July 10, 2001 at 4:41 pm #231251If you and Rivereyes would do a series it would be bigger than Sienfeld or Cheers, but would need more than a 30 minute time slot.
More like 4 hours minimum, LOL.July 10, 2001 at 4:53 pm #231252Yah, they both could be armed witha large pole with big foam knobs on the end, seeing who could knock the other over board first!!!!
July 10, 2001 at 5:13 pm #231257Stillakid,
I think you would have a great shot as a host or co-host with “Jonny”. As rumor has it, you might have to put away a little more scotch than you would prefer.!!! Let’s just hope that you get an interview before good ole’ “riverdisguise”!!!Edited by Jim W on 07/10/01 12:14 PM.
July 10, 2001 at 5:15 pm #231258LOL! If only that were true! I’d quit my job in a heart beat! If I knew the people to sell it to, have I got a show idea that everyfella who fishes could write an episode for! Then I’d quit the day job and be the one of the “cronies”. LOL! Not to mention, I’d have to have all my buddies from FTR on for an episode or 2 or 57…………………………….or so!
“From the forums of FTR, here’s this week’s lesson, From The Boat”…………………blah, blah, blah………
Lesson one would have to be “How to properly open your favorite beverage”. After shooting this 2 to 30 times, we can begin filming clips of “Famous Water Dances”! The possibilities are endless!
July 10, 2001 at 5:19 pm #231259Funny story about how the show started. He was a TV sports anchor in Milwaukee on TMJ 4. His contract was about up when the program director called him to set up a meeting. He figured it was a meeting to negotiate a new contract. Wrong. He was fired that day.
He bought a 12 pack of Pabst and went home to think about what he’d like to do. A lot of new found free time and Pabst?
Why not start a fishing show and have it sponsored by Pabst?
That was about 6-7 years ago.
You’ve got to admit that almost all of us would love to do what he does.July 10, 2001 at 5:34 pm #231261Well, since Leinie’s is my favorite, I’m out of luck, he is using that one now. I don’t think Pabst sponsors him anymore do they? Hmmmm and I don’t think G-loomis or St Croix rods would sponsor me either! Hey, I know, I really like Pizza………..!!!!!
July 10, 2001 at 5:42 pm #231262Pabst isn’t involved with the show anymore. They are just about out of business. Miller decided to pick him up (owns Leinies).
I bought my house from the National Sales Manager of St Croix rods. Nice guy to know, if you know what I mean.July 10, 2001 at 5:44 pm #231263Hmmmmm…………………..National and Manager really stand out there……………….don’t they?! Hmmmm……………..Steve buddy……………wanna do a show??? LOL!
July 10, 2001 at 5:58 pm #231264No kidding, I might hook myself now and again, but I would be willing to do a show!!!
July 10, 2001 at 6:00 pm #231265If we can scrounge up anything on the 21st, we’ll talk.
I’ll have my people call your people… yada, yada, yadaJuly 10, 2001 at 6:06 pm #231266Every show needs sponsors and support so we’re turning you all you Riverfolk to give us your River’pinions. We’d like to hear about some Riverdoos and Riverdon’ts to keep everyone off their Riverrear. We’ll gather at the river and take some Rivervotes…………….get some “Rivereyes” and Rivernays from all the Riversubjects regarding their own Rivershow! Can a get a Riveramen?
July 10, 2001 at 6:22 pm #231269awwww right… awwww right….. geeez I turn my back on the board for a couple of hours and stillasquid starts copy right infringement on my NAME!!! geeez… usually he is just taking it in vain!…… wasssssssss alllofdis stuff bout a drinking shooooowwwww….. urrrrr issss it a fisssshin one?…… nuthin like being 3 ssssssheeeets to the wind ifn yur fissssshin……. by fur now and tanks fur watching RiverEyes…..July 10, 2001 at 6:32 pm #231271It would have to be animated or I’d get killed in every episode and South Park would file suit!
July 10, 2001 at 6:43 pm #231272naaaaa we dont have to aminate, eminate, (enima?)..animalmates?…wull whatevuh it is…… we will do one of dem dose computer graphic rearendings… so after you get killed in the first week we will have a reliable digital standin for all the other shows…!!!! I mean if it works for southpark it could work for us!!!
I envision your part being more like the part of Jim in good ol Mutual of Omahas Wild Kingdom…..
“this week we are fishing for pirahna in the amazon basin…. our assistant stillapup will dive into the river and be our search lure, once he tires out a bit we will hook into him (to get a little blood in the water), and start speed trolling him through some known hotspots…. this usually really triggers an aggressive response!!”July 10, 2001 at 6:59 pm #231273What’s a guy to do with SOOOOooo much love in the house? LOL! I can’t believe for a minute that I can be replaced by a computer clone………………There’s no way a computer regurgitated image could ever push your buttons this good! But I do appreciate that you’re always willing to put me in a position to catch more fish than you! Quite a generous side that you haven’t shown the good people yet.
Now, you do realize, if you’re going to do this show, you are going to have to actually GO fishing vs. reading about it? Don’t worry, we’ll stock the live well to give you better catching odds! LOL!
July 10, 2001 at 7:51 pm #231278Had my own show on MSC. Lots of work and need lots and lots of money. Work not so bad when you know you are getting money but unless you have sponsors from the get go that pay well will be at least 5-9 years before you start making money. I lasted 2 years. Still owe tons of money. Have to have a TV station contract in hand for at least 13 weeks paid up front, and most of the shows and a demo tape to show sponsors to get them to bite. Harder and harder ea year to get a show going. TV costs and editing costs are high. Have to pay camera guy &150-300 a day to get good video. And that’s with out renting a camera. That’s another $100-&150 a day unless you own your equipment. I bought my own equipment and edit studio toward the end and started making comercials for other people. (Don’t do that now. Also did not pay off.) Was a time ago I did this. Unless I owned a company that was footing the bill for this and could write it off as an advertising expense I wouldn’t even get into it. Just my 2 cents worth.
PS. Also more shows wanting to get on the air than advertisors to pay for it. Even some of the better advertisor have dropped some really good shows because of the drop in fishing persons in last years and drop in stock market. ok 3 cents now.

July 10, 2001 at 8:09 pm #231281That’s all good to know and I know it to be true. There are ways to elevate without a burial but it’s difficult as well and definitely a long term commitment. I think this is one of those things that if someone approached me, I’d give it a go. But I have no intention of pioneering a new show myself. I don’t have enough knowledge to do it justice. I have a hard enough time with my videocam!! LOL!
July 10, 2001 at 9:02 pm #231286I also agree with you guys I personally like his show its different not the same stuff over and over and as far as his magazine goes it has some good stuff in it but I just get a kick everytime I see him.
