Sorry Jim I don’t have any reports but could someone tell me a bit about the lake. Things such as Average Depth ( in and outside the channel) Types of structure and where it may be found. Stuff like that. If a first timer was to go where would they drop in and start? Looking to fish Bass, Walleye ect.
I have driven by it about 8 gazzillion times but have never had the oppertunity to fish it.
Thanks for the help.July 9, 2001 at 5:14 pm #231155Haywood (LOL!), Somewhere in your next gazillion fly-bys, stop the vehicle and toss a line in! That’s too often to remain sane! Buddy, just pick a day, post and read (like you do………….), get a map, and just take the general fishing knowledge you possess and try it out. Self discovery is IMMENSELY satisfying!!! Stroke of luck or otherwise, self made successs is what got me in to this sport/hobby and it’s what keeps me going as well. Just stop driving by! LOL!
July 9, 2001 at 6:04 pm #231162I wish I had more accurate info for you, but I haven’t fish the lake since last Tuesday. I pulled plugs both Mon and Tues and caught 20-25 fish each day. The problem was most fish were in the 10-14″ range. We caught a ton of whites, whenever we got out into 14+ feet of water. I would suspect with the water levels dropping and the temps rising the fish may be looking for cooler water. This is a complete guess on my part. I’ll be out on Saturday so hopefully I’ll be able to provide a more detailed report Sat. night. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.
July 9, 2001 at 7:13 pm #231176Hey Jim
The lake isn’t the place to be right now. Go north, go south… the fish are utilizing shallow water still (for the time being) and the bite is good in the river section of pool 4.
Here’s some more info… http://www.fishtheriver.com/forum/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=walleye&Number=1945&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=7&part=1&vc=1
For those that aren’t willing to fish away from Pepin, I know of several individuals getting good fish off the lake by fishing livebait, usually crawlers, very shallow and SUPER early in the AM. These guys are typically off the water by 8 AM. Might have something to do with the heat but who really knows.

Pepin is a dream for those fishing the area for the first time. Average depth is likely 15′ – 20′ and there aren’t many navigational hazards to worry about. There isn’t a “channel” running through the lake like one might be lead to think. Basically the shorelines taper off to 20′ – 25′ rather quickly and the main ‘basin’ portion of the lake is typically 25′ -35′ deep and there is little to no mid-lake structure. Bottom compostion is largely sand, gravel, and silt, depending largely on location and depth. There is a weedline at about 4′-7′ in some areas that has been establishing itself over the last few years that had disappeared many years back.
My advise would be to drop $10 and buy a Pool 4 Hot Spots map at Gander, Fleetfarm, Cabelas, etc. and you’ll have all the info you could handle for a first trip to Pepin.

to what Jim said two postings ago Jame’s info is always topself!July 9, 2001 at 9:47 pm #231203Hey Jim- I agree with James, buy a fishing hot spots map of pool 4. It is a very accurate map and highlights and gives info on many hot spots amongst the lake and river, also gives you suggestions of what to use and when to fish that particular spot.
