I read in the Rochester paper (on line – may have been yesterday’s news) that there was a barge at Wabasha tied up waiting for another one coming up to bust through Lake Pepin. Any movement yet?

Still looks like there is more than 2 feet of ice at mile 770 with not a lot of melting going on. I’m wondering about this too, since the breakup will send icebergs down through pool 5.
ArtPosts: 439March 23, 2005 at 7:44 pm #351823Monday they were breaking the ice by the grain terminal in Winona. Usually when they do that the barges are there within a day.
March 24, 2005 at 3:49 pm #352100Got word this morning that they were on their way up into the lake.

March 26, 2005 at 3:41 pm #352539I have been seeing the empties running upstream for the past 2 weeks now. This is way down here in pools 15 and 16. I would assume that they are north of that also.
March 27, 2005 at 3:23 am #352595A guy I work with said he was in Lake City today testing out his new camera and I asked him about the barges. He said they were breaking ice today on Pepin I wish his pictures would have turned out better ‘cus I’d like to see the process there….especially when one of the breakers got stuck today. Watch out downstream you’ve got some big chunks headed your way

Navigation Season Begins On Mississippi
Mar 28, 2005 7:54 am US/Central
St. Paul (AP) The first tug boat of the season is on its way to St. Paul, marking the start of the navigation season. The Theresa L- Wood locked through Red Wing, Minn. Monday morning after breaking its way through Lake Pepin on the Mississippi River this weekend. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers expects the boat to reach St. Paul Monday afternoon.
The average opening date of the navigation season is March 20. Officials say this year is a little later due to colder weather and thick ice on Lake Pepin.
