My wife and I fished out of Maple Springs friday (7/6) and it sucked pretty bad. I trolled various crankbaits up the rip rap all the way to Lake City and was rewarded with one sheepshead. There was quite a pack fishing out in the LaCaupolis area. The looked to be drifting and jigging and/rigging with live bait. I made a few drifts with and trolls with cranks and jigs, but I didn’t connect with anything. I didn’t see any other fish being caught. I did however mark alot of fish on that flat on my X65. Some of the boats were out in 12-16 feet of water and some were very close to the sand island on the WI side. I wonder if the shallow boats were on white bass. We then trolled down stream on the MN side and I fished a series of three nice looking wingdams on the MN side, nothing. We then trolled down to where we could see the Wabasha bridge, zip. I guess I just had a bad day, but I think it’s safe to say the rip rap bite around Maple Springs is off right now.

well… me and the PUP (check out the STILLAPUP post!)…. keyed in on the pool 3 bite that Tuck mentioned… Ive never been into the pool 3 backwaters… at least not where we went… but we got into some fish… and did ok once we dialed them in…. caught 6, kept 4 they were all about the same 16-18 inches…. and when the locals showed up in the spot we were fishing they had them dialed in just a bit better than we did… so they did a bit better for numbers and the same for size (far as I could see)…….

details… well WE were trolling cranks, 100 feet of line out, deep divers, like deep husky jerks, and rip sticks seemed to be our bread and butter…. others were using shad raps, and seemed to be drifting with a jig and crawler…. though that was via visual ID and these guys were REAL cagey about letting us see them land fish, and see what they were using….

we put in at NORTH lake… what a MESS! a REALLY tough landing to get into and out of…… better have a 4wd, and a boat thats not too huge if your putting in there…… anyway it was a good bite.. and I would go back and give it another try…

ohhhhhh and THAT PUP!!! man… should I even go into how that went? LOL…..

oopps…. missed a couple of details!! we were in mostly 5-7 feet of water, along a current break…. the colors we had luck with were bright… like clown, fire tiger, and chartruese……. others seemed to use the good ol black and silver shad raps as far as I could see…..

Just got back from upper pool 4. Did o.k once we found the fish for a while only thing we caught them on was 3 way with a fire tiger floating crank in 6 to 10 feet of water on the Wisconson side of the navigation bouys south of fishermans cut. Other guys in the tournament got fish on the Minnesota side of the cans and also try Bay City flats and Putman Dam. That was hot today to I heard.
