Foot controled trolling motor

I have a bow mounted foot controled trolling motor. When I took the boat out of storage this year, the foot pedal controling direction was VERY stiff. I really have to stand on it to get it to move and then when it does with all my presser on it, it spins too far so I need to correct. Needless to say, I find myself spending more time concentrating on steering the boat and loosing valued fishing time! Anyone have a tip or solution? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi
I had that problem once with a trolling motor a while ago. The problem with that one was that a cable was actually misaligned and was not riding properly on the bottom of the foot pedal. It was extremely stiff when trying to run the motor with the foot pedal. I had used it a bit like that and the cable actually ground a deep groove in a screw due to the pressure.
Other times when the pedal was stiff perhaps after not using it a while, I’d just WD-40 it on all the components within the pedal, as well as all “joints” (I’m not mechanical; I don’t know the right terminology!!!) and cables on the entire motor. This helped with my motors.
Good luck with solving the problem so you can return to focusing on fishing! It truly is frustrating when a bowmount doesn’t work properly!

What kind of trolling motor is it?? I had that problem with my Minnkota last year. It turn out that a bunch of sand got jammed in there (don’t know how) that caused the same problem. I ended up just buying a new foot pedal, problem solved. I don’t have the cable drive system though, but if you can turn the motor head easily with your hand, I would rule out the cables and look more into the foot pedal. Just my 2 cents.

You may also want to check for a cable tensioning screw on the foot pedal. Many of the motors have it and it may need to be loosened.

If it worked fine before you put it in storage and It did,nt work good when you took it out it probably needs oil.
