Decided to hit the river in Monticello, MN with a couple of my coworkers. One of them being a new member here. The day started out very ugly as I was stupid enough to attempt to launch at Ellison Park. Big mistake as the ramp was icey and it almost got very ugly for me.

Fortunatly I had a horseshoe with me and I was able to get out of that mess. We decided to then launch at Montissippi Park and decided to fish below the hot water discharge at the power plant. At first it was slow. I tried to mix up the presentation with myself trying YUM walleye grubs and my partners using YUM wooly hawgtails. Nkrista nailed the first fish of the day that happened to be a good 15″ smallie (never took a picture of that fish as we thought we would catch more like it )We then got an occasional fish and the boat next to us was catching catfish after catfish. Along with smallies too. They were soaking bait and it seemed to do them well. I think we ended the day with 6 smallies and nothing else. Fish were there, but the activity levels were very sporadic in that cold water.

Below is NKrista with a smallie. The person behind is NOT a terrorist! Just me trying to stay warm.

NKrista with her cold water smallie…..BRRRRRR was it cold out today.

Nice report I sure wish I could have hit the water today. How did you guys fish with all those clothes on? That is the only bad thing about getting the boat out this early on a chilly day, too many layers to be somewhat comfortable. At least ya got some fish

My layers were very comfortable. I had my down jacket and ski pants and I was fine. Although my hands were frozen. I’ll bring warmer gloves next time.

Wish I had a pic of my first fish.

I’m surprised you would want to fish that dirty, nasty, radioactive water.
