Look at the FTR article files on the main menu board. Wing dam 101 by steve h. is a good start.

Personally I like to start casting cranks first, usually from an anchored position, and then I move to jigs or any other kind of slower livebait presentation. Hovering on the top-side of the dams, controlling your position with a kicker or trolling motor is also an excellent way to get on fish as it allows an angler to cover more water than is possible from an anchored position and mobility remains high.

So which is best? No one is “best.” Whatever catches fish. Wingdams are easy to fish once your boat control is top notch. If its not… well, they’re no fun. So I usually suggest a first timer or relatively new angler stick to fishing anchored first and then progress from there.

If you want first hand experience on wing dam fishing, book a day with H2O! It’ll take all the questions out of anything you might feel unsure of. Read the article, book a day, and you’ll be on a new technique for life!

All I have to say on this subject is ….Listen to James. The anchoring technique is really pretty easy once you know where to position yourself and where the fish are on the dam. I had the great experience of hooking up with fellow FTR regular Mike Yager(a.k.a. Suzuki) for a day on the water with James last week. Fishing was a little slow and we had to move around alot, but we caught fish and I learned alot! don’t be afraid to make 25-30 casts each time you anchor. sometimes you have to bop em’ on the head once or twice to get their attention.
Thanks again for a great day on the water James! And thanks to everyone for making this such a great site.
