Rod Retrieval

Does anybody have a good idea how to retrieve a rod fromt the bottom of a lake? My dog knocked a st croix/daiwa combo out in about 13 feet of water which is stained and littered with stumps and fish structures. I have tried skin diving but cant see even with a strong underwater light, and dragging with treble hooks is nearly impossible as they hang on the structure. Any ideas of a contraption would be appreciated.

    Bassbaron,

Been there, so I know it really sucks.

I have had success with dragging a metal clip type stringer, with the clips open. We snagged the line and were able to retrieve the rod that way.

If that doesn’t work, and since it is realatively shallow, you might try a pole with some sort of hooks on the end of it. I’m not talking about fishing hooks, just bent pieces of metal that are not sharp. A cut up cloths hanger and duct tape might do it.

A great pole for this would be the kind used to clean pools. Try to borrow one because they are pretty expensive.

Another Idea for the pole would be an extendable golf ball or lure retriever.

As a last resort, contact your local SCUBA club or volunteer fire department’s search and rescue unit.

They may be looking for a challenge or training oportunity. I had a friend loose a wedding ring at a boat landing and the local search and rescue team volunteered to look for it.

    Good luck,

    Steve

    Good idea there Guam Bomb…

Another thought is an electronic metal detector. I have one that has the end and a long cord, that goes about five feet deep. However, they make these units for total underwater use also. Once located a float marker can save the spot for the recovery effort. Check with your scuba club or local roofing contractor to see if they have a large magnet (used to pick up nails from roofing jobs). There may be enough metal in your reel to be attracted. Lots of luck!
