I just wanted to post a small victory for my 4 year old son Robbie.Last night Robbie, his lil sister Breahna, his mom,and I went for a little boat ride on Lake Altoona.I had to swing into one of my honey holes to dabble a ringworm.I had told Robbie if daddy hooks a fish he can reel it in.After being asked 437 times if I caught one yet(I was still tying the jig on the line!)I made a cast into 4-5′ of water near some brush.Within seconds I felt a good tug.I set the hook and handed Robbie(jumping up and down)the rod and reel.He had the rod in his hand by the very tip of the handle, while rotating the rod around the reel handle pumping and jerking the fish in.He was so dang excited the whole time.He reeled the fish up to about a foot of the rod tip and swung it into the boat. There was a nice fat,12″ walleye.I unhooked it and let him look it over.He showed me the dinosour spines on its back and T-Rex teeth in its mouth. My girl Breahna grabbed its tail wanting to hug it I suspect. We let the ‘Eye go,made another cast or two and went home. The night was perfect.

That will be a day he will never forget. Getting a child hooked on fishing is very special. Kids need something to do and spend their time with and fishing is a great activity for them to get into. You have a fishing buddy for life now. Great going!

You will know Robbie is hooked for life if:

    1. He gets to school this morning and the fish is 18 inches long.

    2. When show and tell time comes its 20+ long.

    3. At days end he pulled that 28 inch pig from the depths of 35 ft of water with 4lb test.

    great story, thanks for sharing.

Great story. Thanks for sharing. What a great experience

that had to of been. Now you will have him trained that it only takes one cast to catch fish. I can remember my first outing with my dad. We trolled and trolled and trolled and when I would start to doze off or daydream he would secretly grab my line and give a good hard pull on my line and quickly release it before I noticed. That seemed to keep me focused for 30 more seconds or so. I vowed never to troll ever again when I grew up because of how boring it seemed……..guess what is one of my favorite techniques?

    Thanks for sharing!

Great story. Sounds a lot like my first experience with fishing, except mine was a 13″ largemouth. After that, I got hooked and can’t get enough. Hopefully your son will be the same way.
