I’m looking to upgrade from a 2000 25 hp Johnson manual start to a new 4-stroke 25 elec. start – Are Honda’s the best or are others similar? Any feedback on motors or good local dealers near La Crosse/Rochester is appreciated

Everyone I talk to that owns a Yamaha loves them and will never go back to anything else. Honda is also a very good motor, I would check around to see which one you can get the best price on, either one you can’t go wrong. Check out Al’s Specialty in Rochester.

Don’t own one, but what about the Suzuki 4-Strokes? Was leaning towards one of those on a new duck boat rig (before new kitchen appliances became “a priority”. Comments from Suzuki owners?

I would go Yammy all the way. Al’s in Rochester and Holmen Pawn near La Crosse sell Yamaha.

Thanks for the advice. I will check in with the Yamaha dealers. I have one price at $3,500 for a ’02 25 hp Honda short shaft w/ elec. start but I’m still going to do some homework.

Give LaCannes Marine a holler. They’ll quote you a price by e-mail or phone. Ask for Destry Foyte.

    Old Ranger,

I’m not sure about Mariners, I’ve always owned Johnson and Evinrude motors myself. I also just starting to look at pricing but I’ve noticed that the Honda seems to be the highest price compared to the others.

Four-strokes, when i looked around to buy myne almost every dealer said that yamaha and honda were top and they said that honda just edged out yamaha with the technology and that. He said that mercs were finally starting to catch up but i ended up buying a merc just caues i grew up around them and they have been durable for me. just what i heardso i thought i would throw it in

    Eyes,

Third season on my Honda 40hp. Absolutely love it. Smooth and quiet, I troll all day and the water running out the pee hole makes more noise than the engine idling – you can talk to your fishing partner in your regular voice versus talking over the engine noise. Went from a 30hp Johnson to the 40 and get three times the fuel economy and don’t have to mix oil with the fuel…. I could continue…. Yup, they cost more but in my opinion those 4 strokes are worth it. I think you could end up with a Honda, Yammy or Suzuki and be happy with any of them…

i have the merc four strok and like he said it runs very quiet, you can be running wide open and actually talk to someone and they don’t have to go WHATT!!!!!!! they are all pretty nice

i’d say definately four stroke you will be so happy that you don’t have to put in so much gas every time

My buddy bought a johnson 70hp tiller had to check the fuel gauge cause it didn’t move all year now he just fills up 1/4 tank at a time. When your in the front of the boat you don’t know if its running full throttle its quieter than my 2 stroke 15 at idle. He knows somebody at bombadier said there coming out with some good stuff no details though. Hard to change brands.

I agree with Chippman on that one, it seems whatever people have had the most luck with and have been the most dependable for them is usually what they end up using.

I’ve got a 1999 50 horse Merc 4 stroke and just love it. It has’nt given me a seconds worth of trouble, it’s quiet and cheap on gas. When I bought this motor new I was told that Yamaha made the power heads for Mercury, anyone know if this is true?

I suppose all these brands are competative.Johnson & Evinerude are the same Mariner & mercury are the same and Honda & yamaha , suzuki I don,t know about they all are built well and it,s just who you talk to I suppose it may be easier to get parts for merc, meriner ,evin, and john but nowdays who knows all are competative and if their is a bad one ,word travels fast so competition would eat them alive so i guess there heads up on that stuff. eat or be eaten. these people count on word of mouth more than tv adds . to much bad talk will kill them

not necessarily, maybe for the new and upcoming fisherman but i think if you have the people that are out there and still believe in what they have and what they use it sure will get passed on to a lot more people.

Mercury using Yamaha powerheads, yes and no. The 2002 midrange Mercurys have their own powerheads now, all new design. I have a 2002 60 hp Mercury Four Stroke EFI. I had it installed late last summer and it has been a super performer. Don’t rule out Mercury. They’re made right here in Wisconsin, too.
