Navionics maps and pool 4.

I installed a Lowrance 3000MT this winter (GPS only, no sonar) and tried it out a couple of times in the last week, on pool 4. The GPS works great, but my question is with the maps. I bought what they call the Region 5 map. It includes pool 4. I noticed a fair amount of the time our boat position was considerably different in real life than on the GPS. It would show us on land, on the wrong side of an island, and such. It was consistent, between 2 different days, so I’m not really doubting the GPS, just the map. Anyone else use the Navionics HotMap on pool 4?

I really bought the unit for LOTW, and have already loaded some of my waypoints from my handheld. That map appears to be perfect, my waypoints dropped directly on top of the hump or point I expected.

    Thanks in advance,

    John

The only thing I can think of would be the Government turning SA (Selective Availability) back on. I have not used my GPS too much this years. (Don’t really need it on the river). Once I’m back on the lake I’ll know for sure.

The Gov said they had turned SA off for good. But we are at War!

If SA were turned back on, then there would have been a broad announcement.

The unit should be good for about 20 meters, although typically it would be better. Are you close to something that would limit sky visibility or provide a multipath reflector?

I use Lowarance Street Atlas with my gps all the time. As a matter of fact I have lots of fun messing with the two together. Anyway once in a while It will show that you didnt follow the highway or it will put you on land when you knew you were in the water with the unit. What Im gettin at is I believe your Map program is what is throwing you the loop. I’m gonna go so far as to say that you can bet the gps is telling you the truth. If there is any question as to which would be accurate It would be the gps. One of the first things you learn In IFR flight training is you have to trust you instruments. I suggest your map program is putting you where you dont want to be or belong, not the gps.

If you have the Navionics Hot maps some of them aren’t very accurate. I have 4 different lakes and 1 of them is pretty good but the other 3 are quite a ways off.

I checked on SA before I bought my Lowrance X15 and they did not turn it back on. I was doubting whether or not I would buy it if they had turned it back on. Sounds like it is something with your software to me.

I have used the 3000MT one more time since this post, the more I look at it, I’m convinced the GPS is just fine, the overlay map is wrong. I checked into how they make the maps: They start with a scanned image of a paper map, and work it over from there. I’d be willing the bet the paper map is a couple 1000 feet off also. They just have never verified the original map the way we can now with onboard GPS. LOTW looks fine, I think it is just pool 4 (so far)

    Thanks,

    John

I have to apologize to ya Flyboy, I didn’t get to Pool 4 this weekend to check out my Navionics. I ended up fishing Pool 5 both days. I do plan to go down this weekend again tho, this time I will be getting one day in on Pool 4, I’ll check out my maps and report back to you.

Flyboy, I did make it to Pool 4 this weekend and was able to use my navionics for the first time. As I motored through the river and a few backwaters my Navionics was carefully guiding me over points and Islands. Funny thing tho, it didn’t even scratch my prop! So… they are off just a bit in some areas but didn’t seem to be off everywhere, some places it seemed to be right on. Overall I was really pleased with the product and I’m looking forward to getting some more use out of it!

Pool 4 is 2-3 times as high right now as summer readings…. maybe that could lead it to being off or not hitting yr prop??

It was pretty clear that I was actaully driving directly over islands and sometimes even on the railroad tracks! LOL Not too big a deal tho, I’m still happy with the product and can’t wait to try it on some of the other lakes.

Thanks for the conformation. The biggest reason I was concerned was Pool 4 was the first place i got to try out my new GPS. And I wanted to know if it was just mine, or not. I have since used it a few more places, and let me tell you, I wouldn’t use my hand held GPS in the boat again. Not unless one of my bouys lost their weight. I cant wait to use it on LOTW.

    Thanks again,

I haven’t used mine elsewhere yet either. I think I’ll get to Minnetonka next week to check it out.
