WHERE ARE THE FISHES?

I just got back from a very short fising trip to Lake Pepin. Fished Friday afternoon from about 2:00 til 7:00 and all day Saturday. Caught a total of two white bass and one small sauger. (Had to rush back home because some punks broke into my business ) I guess that I was cocky after having such a great time last June and expected to limit out on Walleyes and white bass. Just goes to show ‘ya fishing never stays the same. Has anyone caught anything on the Big Lake? I did see a few people catching a few white bass, but NOT at all what it used to be. Also no gulls diving like they used to either. I am planning on coming back in a week or so and just wondering if it is worth it or not.

I have been having the best luck just north of lake city, Most of the walleyes have been coming in 8′ or less any deeper than that you seem to get into more sheepies.trolling cranks has been the most productive. But it has slowed alot lately seems the fish are in a little funk. Good Luck

    airpart,

This time of year is funky like that, one day they’ll jump in da boat and the next they are no where to be found . If you like spending your time on the lake, and it’s eye’s your after, the better fish from here on out will come in 1′ to 8′ of water most of the time. Casting/trolling cranks right along the rip rap is a good bet from now until the water temps fall in to the upper 40’s. Rip rap adjacent to deeper water is going to be your best bet as well.

Thanks a lot Dustin. I guess that I was trolling in water too deep. I’m coming up again a week from Friday and will try the shallower water. I assume that you mean the MN side of the lake where there is a lot of rip-rap. I just don’t know how I am going to troll in one foot of water. My wife and I like to keep moving so casting is not an option for us.

Look at it this way! If you are casting you are always doing something…..keeping busy. It makes for a fun day.

If you like to keep moving that’s great but don’t move to fast and over look a productive area just to be on the move. Moving around and catching 3 fish is a lot less fun that staying put and getting 12

Both the MN and WI side will hold fish this time of year. Good luck on your next trip and let us know how it goes

Thanks again for the great advice. That’s what is so great about this site. I will be up there next Friday thru Sunday and try your sugestions. I will let everyone know how it went. Just hope there are no more emergencies to make us leave early again as it’s not fun running back and forth between Chicago and Red Wing if it’s not for fun. If you see us on the lake come over and say HI. I’ve got a black over cream Sylvan 1900 with a 150 Johnson and a NEW Yamaha T-8.
