Regarding how to locate crappies this is my way of finding the fish. I have found that crappies prefer calm water. Next preference deep water. Deep water may vary. In any given area the crappies will school in the deepest water adjacent to some type of structure. That structure may be as unnoticeable as a submerged island, rock ledge, timber, or preferred spawning areas. With your locater cruise the areas that may have these qualities, when you mark a fish, test drive the area. If the crappies are what you marked on the graph you are in for some good catches. Large minnows are also the ticket. Fat heads and larger minnows, 2-3 inches long will consistently catch you the larger crappies, while keeping the smaller nuisance perch, whitebass, and small bluegills to a minimum. Always use a slip bobber, this allows for an adjustment in fish levels, a number 6 walleye hook, and hook minnow behind dorsal fin, keeps minnow horizontal not vertical. This method has always produced good catches of crappie, the most important factor is the deep water in the backwater areas, find it and work it.
