Ya Hey Guys, first an apology: frankly, the Walleye/Sauger
fishing on the pools I report and guide on, in one word is “slow”. If you’ve got the time to sit, you can catch a Sauger with a jig, but it looks like the Eye are in spawn.
Here’s the good stuff. Crappie are starting to go ! With the river proper on spring rise and the eye in spawn, head to the back-waters with no current. This nice warm spell is mov’n em out of their wintering areas and putting them on wood. I didn’t say brush! They aren’t that shallow yet!
A crappie jig of 1/16oz is the way to go–why you ask. It’s the most efficient, as opposed to the traditional float/minnow. The jig allows you to cast it into the wood and probe the entire length. The crappie are still holding tight and deep in relation to the over all depth of the slough.
Sorry I don’t have digital yet, but I had a 14+” crappie come in the other day! My personal best!!!!!!!! It shows that there are some truly big slabs still plying the river !
A bonus fish — Carp are making their first shallow forays and are aggressively look’n for something to eat. Oblige ’em with a jig on ultra-light tackle and you’ll forget about the slow Walleye bite.
